Un Nerf the Bow

Recommended Posts

Currently the damage of the improvised bow is very low - akin to being shot by a 9mm. Given the mass and surface area of the entry wound, the arrows should do considerably more damage, more akin to the damage previously done, or require a two hit kill on an unarmoured player with bone and composite arrows, and maybe 3 hits with the improvised arrow. Bleeding chance can however be lowered and a higher shock value should be added.

The bow as it is already is hard to use. The current low damage is both unrealistic and making the bow too hard for most players to even consider using.

The bow as it is right now is much more realistic than what you suggest. The bow we can make right now in-game is literally a stick with a rope, which cannot launch an arrow very far or fast at all, meaning that damage dealt will be very low. When the composite bow is added it should deal a lot more damage and fire much farther (however there is an issue as I believe damage is completely based on ammunition type at the moment so it wouldn't actually deal more damage, I'm not sure how that issue is going to be resolved).

Also, your general perception of how bows kill seems to be a bit off (as it is in most video games, movies, etc.). Bows are ineffective if you try to use them like guns, that is, for an instant kill. In real life bows are mostly used to cause an open wound on the target, from which they should bleed profusely. Of course a shot to the head would still likely kill instantly and a shot to some vital organs would quickly incapacitate the target (that's what shock is for...sidenote, maybe shock damage needs a rework?), but the majority of damage caused by an arrow should be extremely heavy bleeding, with little standard hit damage.

OnionofShame is indeed correct, an improvised bow with an improvised arrow would no minimal damage unless you hit someone in the eye or throat. Right now the improvised bow is a stick with rope tied to each end. You don't need any crafting tools to make it, it's not shaped into a recurve, and it's rope, not bow string, so the power would be pretty limited.

In all honesty, they should allow people to throw sharpened sticks like spears at people. It'd be about as lethal.

As others have said, the in-game improvised bow would really, really, REALLY suck in real life.

Bows actually require a decent amount of work to be made effective.

And, (also as stated before), arrows kill through blood loss, not through "pure damage" like bullets. Put a nice wide broadhead on an arrow, and put said arrow in the torso of an animal, and it should die within 30 seconds or so (see the below video for proof). A shot anywhere else will only really (it will still hurt like nothing else, and put you into severe shock as a result) trip the target up. Oh, and bone arrowheads are perfectly fine: with a solid bow, they can penetrate plenty deep and even punch through other bone. Plus, they don't get damaged as easily as stone/glass heads.

(about 2:30 in)

This would be the bare minimum for what I would consider a bow "good enough" to hunt large animals or humans with, and only barely. This would be a "stick bow"

A "normal" self-bow (that is, a bow carved from a solid piece of wood) takes a year, at least, to make

I actually prefer un-recurved self bows. Easier to make, and there is little shooting difference between the two styles (recurves might shoot a little faster, but I tend to use shorter arrows, anyways)

If anything, I would like to see wooden arrowshafts take a realistic amount of damage after penetrating a target. Usually, the animal falls onto the arrowshaft when it dies, breaking or bending it at the very least. So, you would have to make new shafts, and harvest the points from broken ones. This is why I use reed shafts with wooden foreshafts: easy to make and replace. A little lightweight, but within 20 yards, there is really no discernible difference ( at least on small game)

Wooden shafts would probably be more accurate and more "powerful", as a result of the wood flexing around the bowshaft less (archers paradox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer%27s_paradox)and being able to impart more weight to the cutting edges of the head.

I'm sure that over time, the bow(s) in DayZ will meet their realistic standards.

The improvised bow as stated, is literally balls. The composite bow with composite arrows will probably make someone bleed out within minutes. And once a stamina system is added to the game I will expect that players aren't just going to be able to sprint away if they have an arrow 4 inches deep in their small intestines.

Take a look at the above video I posted. A well-placed arrow with a wide broadhead can cause death via exsanguination in about a minute, or even less. That is balanced by the fact that you 1) have to be REALLY practiced with the bow in order to make those shots, and 2) have to be pretty close. With a self-bow, I wouldn't make a shot on an animal (or a person) from farther away than about 20 meters.

Yeah I've eaten moose that was taken down with one arrow. They should be hard to make not weak when shot.

on a side not the title of this thread is an anagram for "Un f the bowner" & "the bowner fun"
