Would SCAR seem suitable in the DayZ-environment?

Recommended Posts

Rifles, shotguns & pistols already seem to have a larger selection than automatic carbines, them only being three. Would SCAR-H, which use 7.62 and/or SCAR-L - 5.56 ammo seem suitable in the DayZ-environment?

Probably, but civilian weapons are more prevelant for a reason.  They want it so that military weapons will be more rare, so that say a group will have a mix of weapons rather than everyone armed with an AKM with drum mags or whatever the 'best' weapon of the current patch is.

Eh, Id like to see more military weapons as in a larger VARIETY of military weapons. Not as in more military weapons spawned.

Then again I'd like to see a larger variety of weapons I'm general

DayZ made an opportunity to showcase some rifles that are sensible for the game that other games might overlook because they're too 'boring'.

Yes, the SCAR-H would definetely belong in DayZ. According to the lore set down in ArmA 2, the weapon is used very commonly by USMC forces at the time. Personally I would much rather see a SCAR-H, as the SCAR-L would be really similar in operation to the M4A1, and the SCAR-H would fill a new role (high-end select-fire battle rifle), and just looks much cooler in my opinion.

Yes. I personally love the Scar-H, too.
It's among my favourite weapons. Infact, I recently just purchased a newly-released Gas Blow-Back SCAR-H with a mechanically working cock-handle for my airsoft-collection!

Hello there

I dont think that the DAYZ Lore includes the OA expansion which is where the SCAR series was introduced as far as I remembered.

The one problem I have with a battle rifle variant is that it would be REDICULOUSLY desired/coveted/OP.

Just think about it. A semi automatic sniper rifle (basically) which has the ammo capacity of a assault rifle. Hello bandit lovers everywhere.

I like the assault rifle version though. :)

The Scar H is my favorite assault rifle IRL. I would love to see one in the game.

Nope.

Not used by any nation in any sizeable or considerable numbers.

It is a niche weapon system that failed to be adopted. Just because some obscure nation has a few dozen of them in their military does not mean it would be in any way plausible in dayz.

You callin my America obscure? >:(

Lol, yeah Gib here is right. While it's cool and all, its mostly used by SEALs- and even then noone likes it cause its nearly 8 pounds of plastic and is really bulky.

Personally I'm waiting on my M1A or M14 :3

Even the numbers that are actually procured in the US is super super insignificant.

They are probably no longer even buying them as they have had problems with the weapon's stock breaking among other problems due to ergonomics.

The gun is just a weekend warriors guns nothing more nothing less. A failed weapon platform that never took off.

Yet we have one of the weapons in the game that earlier models of it were considered some of the worst weapons in the world.

*cough* *cough* M4 anyone? *cough* *cough*

Key word. Earlier

That's like saying all cars are shit because the first cars had a wood frame and did under 20 mph lol.

And point is the SCAR is dying because its a complete piece of shit. Nobody wants an 12 pound chunk of plastic that's twice as bulky as an M4 when you can havea 6-8 pound chunk of aircraft aluminum that is excellent for close quarters.

You're both half-wrong and half-right - If vanilla A2 is canon to DayZ then I'd imagine that OA is as well, but the events of the two are so different and not really connected in any way so it doesn't matter whether they are or not. However, the US faction in OA is the Army, not the USMC, and it takes place not long after, so again even if the two are connected the USMC probably still had its M16A4s and M4A1s rather than SCARs during that timeline.

Rifles, shotguns & pistols already seem to have a larger selection than automatic carbines, them only being three. Would SCAR-H, which use 7.62 and/or SCAR-L - 5.56 ammo seem suitable in the DayZ-environment?

Yes and no. The gun's in service in quite a few countries (including Eastern Europe), it is technically canon to ArmA (and either way is used by special operations that probably participated in the Chernarus conflict) and it's undoubtedly a cool gun. It wouldn't necessarily be a poor weapon to have on that alone.

However, when it gets down to it, the gun doesn't make much sense to include over other firearms in either the L or H versions. There are a plethora of other far more fitting and interesting 5.56 rifles that they could add over the SCAR-L, and guns like the FN FAL and G3 are more sensible than the H. Would it be a horrible weapon to have? No. But there are far better weapons in the same role that make having it basically inconsequential for any reason - the only exception being if they decide to add an OA equivalent Army faction to the game, in which case it's perfectly acceptable.

Yet we have one of the weapons in the game that earlier models of it were considered some of the worst weapons in the world.

The whole "worst in the world" thing was more of a stigma against the entire platform that came from some prevalent issues that came with the first rifles issued. There were various issues with the original M16 rifle, but the biggest reason it was so poorly accepted among US troops initially was because they were not issued with cleaning kits and the top brass was under the illusion that the rifle was "self-cleaning."

Even the shortly later XM16E1s and follower M16A1s were markedly better but the stigma remained for a large number of reasons. The M4A1 is far from an original M16.

Plus, even though gibonez is wrong in that the platform "never took off" (it did, just not to the degree that was hoped for), the AR-15 style of rifles is among the most common in the world today, unlike the SCAR which is comparatively minor.

I could see the SCAR-H as being an uber-rare Battle rifle, but nothing more. Honestly something like an FAL, G3 or even a 417 makes much more sense to me, as it seems the SCAR won't be around too much longer, being religated to the world of CoD Fanboys who jump on the most tactical-looking gun they can find.

The high price tag is keeping even them out of reach.

Even with my iop discount the price would be insanely overpriced.

Like you said the Scar will be a relic a failed gun when it is all said and done.

Yeah, the problem isn't that the SCAR-H is just an inherently bad weapon to have in the game - it's that when all is said and done there are too many other more realistic alternatives that make sense. Sure, if the devs intend on having 10 different western battle rifles in the game then it'd be fine, or if they're going to recreate Operation Arrowhead's US Army faction then it's fine, but considering that both of those are unlikely why add it?

I can't imagine there are too many BRs of any kind planned, not to mention the standard "20-round 7.62x51 NATO" ones. You've got the FN FAL, HK G3, SVT-40, SR-25/M110, MK14 Mod 0/1, and HK-417 that all make far more sense before the SCAR-H itself is worthwhile.

Only in the case that they recreate the OA US Army faction in DayZ would the SCAR actually become a "probable" weapon.
