How can 1PP be improved?

Recommended Posts

I have heard people say that 1PP has some problems in DayZ and I'm curious to know some details about how it should be fixed.

I personally do not play many FPS games or shooters much these days besides DayZ and actually got mostly burnt on the genre somewhere around Goldeneye 64.

I am by no means an expert on what an ideal 1PP camera would be and I've been using the ARMA2 camera so long, I'm completely accustomed to it.

The camera was recently raised above Bilbo Baggins height but I've heard that is still flawed as well....

Can someone provide an example of an ideal/perfect 1PP, height and FOV in an FPS?

I also know multi screen set-ups and VR tech can offer more complexity to this topic but I'm mostly interested in the 1080 side of things.

Thanks for feedback/ideas!

Fov is extremely subjective even with 3pp players. If you ask 20 people I would suspect you would get 15+ answers.

They already give us an option to disable headbob which would, were that not an option to disable it, be the #1 thing i would suggest. I often wonder if some of the less arma-familiar players know you can even do this. I have yet to encounter a individual that isn't made totally nauseous by it yet it is enabled by default. Perhaps it should be disabled by default.

Very few people leave head bob on, that's true.

The people I know who like it only like a subtle amount.

I would like to know that I'm using the FoV that is best for my settings/TV and that it is as close to "authentic" as possible in retaining proportions and some semblance of panorama (periphery not possible on single screen).

If there are any changes that would facilitate this, I would be interested to see them.

In discussion with a friend in Steam chat he just said he thought the current 1PP was fine (he is a much bigger fan of FPS games)...

The best improvement I can think of is "stances", like arma3, but in a survival theme, not military.

A3 stances are firing positions for your weapon, survival stances should be based on postponing head for better vision, without exposing body while retaining low profile for stealth. Examples...Prone, but lifting head over grass....peeking around fence, like lean but not 15 years old kind.....tip toe stretching....more overall level of sight for windows. Point being, AI would not sense body exposure.

Also, I haven't tried oculus rift, but would consider it, if it happens for dayz, which I believe has a good chance down the road.

Not that much.

Tone down the breathing sounds. That said you do get used to them BUT I still found it painful to listen too.

Really the biggest issue for me was/is fps so not specifically about 1p but I found that in 3rd I can cope with low fps whereas in 1st I start feeling sick. Also my fov is quite narrow. I may be wrong but the narrower the fov the better the fps seemed to be.

I have head bob off obviously. I think as well in first person that mouse acceleration and sensitivity set incorrectly are the cause of people feeling not only sick but not in control.

Maybe better defaults in settings might help?

I'm an fps player but I've played far more in 3rd than 1st. 3rd is a good game even with it's flaws but 1st is an absolute adrenaline rush. Sometimes I have to play a bit of third to calm down after a first person session.

The inventory screen could show your character as he/she is seen ingame with stance and motion instead for standing still no matter what.

The the V3S seat should be adjusted - currently the driver seems to sit way too high. And of course it should get working mirrors.

Then the free look could get some improvements mainly the introduction of "inverse free look" where you can toggle free look (double tap alt) and still move your character as usual by pressing/holding alt to turn.

In my mind, the only thing I would change about the first person perspective in this game is to allow a wider FOV. With the slider maxed (which I can now do since they locked the ADS FOV, Thank God!), I still feel like my FOV is a little bit too narrow. If I had to guess, I would say the max FOV on the slider is somewhere around 85. In BF4, for example, I use an FOV of 100. I'd like the ability to set an FOV by numerical value as I like.

Other than that, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the 1PP camera. It feels just right in every other way as far as I am concerned.

I moved from 3rd to 1st around christmas when I got ssds so could guarantee ok frames most of the time and it's funny how it feels like the camera is in your characters chest. Then you realise, it's not, it's just that you've been used to a camera up high in third. It still feels like maybe it's slightly too low though, as if it's in your neck or mouth.

A wider fov (but not to the point of being stupid) is a biggie. It's very easy to run right past people in dayz (and arma too) that you'd definitely see in real life.

A big reason people probably don't play 1st is it's jarring after playing 3rd. Suddenly you get all the super load breathing, the cam seems super super low so it's off putting initially.

I use free look almost constantly, this will eliminate your problem to a large degree, try to think,,, free look, free look, free look.

I have a Track IR which I use in ArmA but not in DayZ because of the CQC.

I use it a lot when i'm in highly dangerous places (e.g. veresnik mil base) but less so when I'm in fields or woods. I miss it not being in other games. But even though it's great, my fov being kind of narrow is still an issue for me.

Since I brought it up, Veresnik is the best example of how much more exciting the game is when played in first. It's pretty exciting in third but in first it's terrifying. In 3rd you typically get to the outside wall and survey the compound for a couple of minutes before entering. In first you go in pretty much blind.

Free look is a mouse button must. I actually recommend keeping head bob up, it keeps me from running constantly, which keeps me going the pace I should. This is more of a arma tip, because running in dayz is so overpowering, but it's going to change back.

Also, FOV should take into account your monitor size, resolution, and your sitting distance. There is calculator for arma, but this just tells you what numbers to put into the cfg. I like 87.5, I have a 16:10 monitor.

The main reason i dislike 1pp is because the footsteps mostly come out of the right side for me. Kills surround sound

Can't say I experience that. Does it happen regardless of the sound source?

Only thing I can think of are the following.

1. Increase performance to allow higher frame rates.

2. Raise the height of the camera for first person so that it is more at eye level and not neck level where it is now.

Yes. I've tried using my speakers, earbuds, and headphones. All are like that. It's not a major problem but just ruins the experience for me.

I do think stances are important.

I was hiding behind a sandbag bunker tonight at the new east Cherno roadblock. There were slits for weapons in the sandbag wall but I couldnt peek through them...standing was too tall and crouching too low.

And I thought I was the only one who didn't disable it entirely. :D I prefer it at about 1/3 of default - it's immersive and provides me with a sense of movement while not being too intrusive.

Hail the TrackIR brotherhood! Playing without it is like having a sudden bout of neck arthritis.. (I play 1pp servers exclusively)

The only major problem I have is with how twitchy the melee combat is in 1PP - I get neck pains from trying to keep track of someone who's dancing around me 3pp-style and swinging indiscriminately. I find it works best to conserve my movements, wait it out and let them punch the air - then land one or two precise head punches at an opportune moment.

With TrackIR taking care of the limited FoV problem (I keep it at default), the only other issue I have is the recently nerfed naked eye 'zoom' - makes scanning so much less reliable and forces me to go in with less situational awareness than I'm comfortable with. I was already slow and deliberate before the change, now I've been slowed down to a crawl..  :(

P.S. If the heavy breathing annoys you - GOOD! Better unlearn the habit of sprinting everywhere before the stamina system is in. ;)

I've been playing black mesa (hl remake)  the last couple of days and it just looks and feels right. The only time I feel like I'm a midget is when I can't get on a ledge that I could in rl. The view is spot on as is the fov.

Camera moves too fast with headbob on, in other games headbob has a much more smooth camera movement.

It would be nice if we all have a standard smooth headbob, removing headbob completely gives you advantage over others players who have headbob enabled.
