Dayz Core Fucntionality

Recommended Posts

HI,

I am just going to get this out ... Don't care if this get so much DISLIKES as long as its off my chest I am a happy man !!

I have been supporting Dayz since the Mod and personally feel that there is to much new things ( Crafting / Guns / Farming / etc. ). This to me is kind of pointless and frustrating as the CORE game play functions are not up to standard and none of the above mentioned are really enjoyed how it should be.

Then again I understand that this is only in Alpha but still, without good foundation how will the rest of the structure be secure and reliable and most importantly ENJOYED.

To me there are CORE functions in a game that makes the building blocks for the rest of the game and please Comment if you think otherwise.

* NEW ENGINE ( No.1 on my list as the Rest will Fail without this, this will be my Foundation on building the game forward ) + ENSCRIPT

* ZOMBIES ( This is probably the MAIN core function as this is a POST-apocalyptic game ).

* SOUND ( No FPS game will work with the Poor Sound that's currently in-game ).

* LOOT ( Loot has to be good enough and on Par with standards as this as I have seen can make the game POINTLESS to play )

* SERVER CAPACITY ( This is also a Main mark in my book as we sitting with a HUGE map and barely 50 players can join )

* BASIC TRANSPORT ( This is Coupled with the Huge map, don't always need cars, Bicycles or Something will do ) *We have a V3S now atleast*

Once this is all up to Par and a person gets Decent FPS then by all means bring in all the Extras.

This is just my Thoughts on the Roadmap.

Hopefully there is some that agree with me.

1. They are working on a new engine 'enfusion'

2. Zombie AI and spawnrate is still WIP

3. They are working on a new sound engine

4. New loot system is already in expirimental

5. They want to increase server cap

6. They are working on more vehicles

7. Stop crying like a little b*tch and read the weekly status reports before posting this crap

@OP: I don't agree with all of your comments or priorities but I also feel that a focus on core functionality would be beneficial to player enjoyment AND development progress.

Alpha.

The only waste of time is fixing code that will only break again when the next feature is added.

FUCKING ALPHA.

ALPHA.

ALPHA.

Apparently A LOT of you "TESTERS" who have been here since the mod can't be bothered to READ about the games development.

This can make you MORE ignorant than people who just started playing.

Dear OP:

The point of alpha is precisely to add all the planned content, then worry about debugging, cleaning then up and balancing them later.

We also have very different ideas what the core gameplay is. Zombies for me are pretty whatever, I agree that they should be in but they are more or less already and will improve in time. A lot of things you are calling "extras" are for me core: crafting, survival elements, etc. In my mind this is a post-apocalypse survival title first and an FPS and zombie game second. This is not to say it must or should be this way but I thought it useful to point out that what you see as obviously true is not agreed upon by all the playerbase.

To answer as short as possible, every single thing you mentioned is currently under development and being actively worked on.

If you are truly a mod player and have followed development, you would know the answers to all your questions :)

Also, theres a clear difference between the art department and the engine coding department. Its far easier to make a new gun, then to code a core part of the engine, thats why you get more new items then funtionality.

Patience is a virtue, and im afraid you dont posses it.

The purpose is NOT to add new content and worry about debugging and cleaning up later. I hear this often repeated by DayZ fans but I can't find a source for this (false) information. These same fans run around telling everyone they don't know anything about game development while repeating this lie.

The purpose of the alpha/beta testing phase of a project is to verify (via black-box testing) that implemented features function as intended. The whole point of alpha testing is identifying bugs that will need to be fixed before the initial release of a product. This is why a feature freeze typically occurs BEFORE the testing phase of the dev. cycle even starts.

You just lumped alpha and beta together as if they were the same. What you are describing, however, is beta phase. Also, lose the "fan" terminology, it just looks like ad hominem nonsense and weakens your argument. Edited by Ebrim

I couldn't agree more with the OP, and I know plenty of people that feel the same. Yes it's Alpha, but after 1 year and 5 months (ish) of it you'd expect the game to be optimized better, be less clunky and basic stuff like getting hit through walls by zombies to be fixed. I've personally not played for a few months because of the many frustrating bugs in the game that seem to be ignored.

Just my opinion before any fanboys give me shit.

Alpha and beta typically are the last two testing phases of a project after core development has already been completed. Alpha is normally internal and beta is normally external but they fulfill the exact same requirements. Black box testing of an almost-finished software product.

Why would I lose the "fan" terminology? I've only heard DayZ fans repeating this nonsense about adding features during an alpha and content during a beta. That is 100% bullshit in a typical dev. cycle.

What magical Alphas can you use as a good example of "almost" finished, while still being Alpha?

This concept is contradictory at it's core.

When it comes to DayZ THERE IS NO PRIOR STANDARD.

I would have loved if the engine/renderer would have come first as with all other games but this cobble together approach, on top of obsolete tech, to then swap in modern tech approach has never been attempted as far as I know, certainly not on this scale.

If you have the depth to draw all these factors to bear on your thoughts RE: DayZ dev, you might not take the same stance you take now.

Also, just because a majority of people hold something to be true does not make it so.

If that were the case, the Sun would orbit us and heavier objects would fall faster.

I'm no developer but my understanding is that the "feature freeze" you mention is post alpha, pre beta. Beta isn't about adding content but refining and debugging the content that is already there, some of which was added during the alpha phase before the feature freeze. Also, apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this "bullshit". Alas, it seems your education campaign has a long way to go. :(

From "what testers should expect" from alpha:

Plenty of bugs, crashes, missing docs and features.

(those features haven't been added yet)

Also, by using "fan" as a way to discredit anyone who disagrees with you, you're implying that your argument isn't strong enough to stand on its own and thus requires somehow diminishing the credibility of those with opposing views. It's poor arguing style and makes you look foolish or simply incompetent.

@Ebrim: In my experience "feature freeze" refers to the fact that no new features will be added and all features, hopefully, exist with at least placeholder functionality. "Feature complete" means that all features are implemented with their intended functionality even if there are bugs. Scope creep during an alpha is a recipe for disaster.

Disclaimer: I am not a game developer but I am an experienced programmer for a F2P game publisher. I understand there is often a difference between typical software development and game development. For instance, alpha testers are normally given a requirement document so they can compare intended features to their current implementation. I just feel, personally, it is disingenuous to state that the DayZ dev cycle is normal.

Also, I am a DayZ fan. I wasn't trying to insinuate that they are wrong BECAUSE they are fans. I just wanted to say that this is the first place I have heard this. The testing phase isn't where the primary implementation of features should take place.

Edit: sorry for all of the typos. On my phone.

I agree, after all this time the basics should have been in place.

Survival (Crafting) is a CORE function I agree.

TO ALL THE OTHERS THAT HATERS AND THOSE WHO IS MISSING THE POINT:

I know the loot, engine, sounds, etc. are in Development .... but it took them more then a year to start the Development. This should have been the FIRST PRIORITY.

These things have been worked on since I bought the alpha in July or something. I'm not sure what you're implying here, but whatever it is, you're probably wrong.

I agree with OP, devs care more about nonsence like gardening rather than working on important stuff.

DayZ SA is a bad example of early access because devs do not care about community. I belive since release peolpe asked for better fps, zombies and transoprt, but devs responded with "go plant some tomatoes"...

This game has been out for 1.5 years and we have yet to see ANY improvement between Player and Zombie interaction.  When fighting a zed, it is like fighting a crazy inter dimensional being that fluxes, doesn't get hit when clearly on the mark.  No one will want to play finished product except for hard core DayZ fans because other better developed games are in production and coming to light.  Get a ramp up on this bad body.  Get the new engine out.  If all these items and content updates move to a new engine will they know how to transition properly or we will have another 1.5 years of strange release updates.

best thing for gaming SDLC is to make the plan and stick with it.  Focus should have been to release the new engine version before end of first quarter (3-31-2015) planned at the end of 2014.

DayZ slowly losing ground in survival mainly because they forgot.... how to survive.

It is not a finished product.

The product was commercially released (meaning they took customer's money) in December 2013. The fact that it is an unfinished product has nothing to do with stephenk420's point that zombies have been broken for a year and a half, IMO.

Most of the things you mention are being worked on and have improved since the release of the public alpha.

People seem to assume that content such as guns and outfits are holding progress back. In reality the people who make clothing and items are different to the people working on core functions. Given that making items is presumably a faster process than making major engine and performance tweaks one can easily see why we have more of one than the other.

Having said that though, performance has improved notably since day one, as have the zombies and most of what you mention.
