Train Track Vehicle

Recommended Posts

I would like to see 2 or maybe 3 of those hand operated rail car/tram(s) in SA.

I think it would be awesome to be able to travel in such a mode, there could be two players who propel themselves.

Maybe the rail car/tram would have to be fixed with parts that have to be found. And maybe the car/tram could be up gradable with armor plating to a certain degree with the potential for more riders through the up grades. And they could have a varying degree of condition as well, just as everything else does.

Perhaps having control of the tram would unlock access to otherwise inaccessible train depots on the map and the depot would contain loot that wasn't offered anywhere else on the map. And if there were a few different depots to enter, each one could hold a part or parts that could be combined to build an enhanced weapon or body armor or whatever, the possibilities are wide open!

The depot could be a cover for a once secret laboratory where special military or bio engineering experiments were being conducted.

I see these trams as a great source of skirmishes for players and groups who would fight for control of them, providing for a whole new dimension of game play!

Second, I wouldn't expect rail based vehicles for a while, Modding will probably be out before that then people will make working trains on their own.

Third comes the box of needles directed at your balloon.

If a train can get there, a person on foot can get there simply by following the tracks, this still applies to both tunnels and bridges.  So no 'secret military bases' only accessible by train.  What exactly do you picture when you think 'traincar/tram'?  Do you think you're just gonna jump in the cab, turn the key and be on your way?  Even modern locos don't start up with a turn of a key (there's usually a lot of switch and leaver flipping and buttons involved that all have to be done in the right order).  There's a lot of things blocking the tracks in key points, locomotives, rollingstock, general debris, you'd need to be able to clear all of that to get around, especially if your using something bigger than a Speeder.  Also how are you going to fuel it?  An American GP9 (which looks similar to what is at least shown in Chenarus) has a fuel tank of around 1,100 gallons, with a similar loco burning around 159 gallons per hour (in 'balls out' mode).  Your little 5 gallon jerry can will probably just be enough to get the engine to turn over.

Trust me, I'm an Engineer Brakeman.

I could see rail-pump cars being added into the game.

They'd be an uncommon, but lucky find.

I don't think its on the Dev's to-do list currently.

But as the legendary BigMike said, I think the modders will get to it first.

Listen to that dude. He knows his ways with cars, games, and can make beer. ;)

Have a good one!

Sorry, did indeed miss the handcar.  Focused on the word Tram/Rail car and figured you meant something along the lines of an DMU or EMU.  A hand/pump car would be doable IMO, but still I doubt it's high up on the Devs' list of things to do.  I'm not sure if they were very popular outside of North America.  It would still have the problems of being blocked by other things on the rails, although they're usually lightweight enough for the crew using it to derail, move pass the obstacle, and rerail.

Now I have seen some rather interesting videos in Europe of a man 'rail surfing' using a wooden pallet and simple wheels on tramways and streetcar lines.  That would be even lighter than even a simple handcar (though maybe not as simple to move) as you can literally pick it up and carry it.  In the US we have handcars (obsolete and usually found on museum lines or in private hands) speeders (both antique and new) which are motorized, Hi-Rail equipped vehicles, or even modified road vehicles themselves (post D-day they used Jeeps fitted with flange wheels in French Trainyards to act as switchers).

I do hope someday we'll have rail vehicles in SA, but only if they do it in a realistic manner.  It urks me in game when I see errors when it comes to trains.  European Buffers and equipment on whats suppose to be a North American Railroad, or knuckle couplers on European equipment.  Much in the same way the Mosin being chambered for 7.62 NATO urks our gun lovers.  Though so far what I've seen just from the right of way is satisfactory on BI's end (though there's a few glaring things like the grade being more like a rollercoaster in some areas)

BigMike

I would agree my suggestion is probably not going to generate much attention.

My initial thought was as a mod, I mostly play on BMRF and I did mention it there, and I was referred here.

But yes, I like you line of thought Big Mike, something small and light would be perfect. Or a two or three person version as well. And yes, the thought of being ambushed is exactly where I was heading with this. It would be such a thrilling undertaking to set out on the tram/cart Watching every spot of cover along the way.

Good times indeed. Any ways, that my little idea, glad to have had a chance to mention it. I'm on steam as surg1cal if anyone wants to add me. Cheers! !

Yes it does.  There's been many many topics and suggestions on rail vehicles, from the ridiculous idea of fully automated trains picking up new spawns with NPC conductors protecting the train, down to the humble pump car or 'rail skateboard' I mentioned earlier.

This is the said handcar from the above post.  Those handholds on the end that make it look like a stretcher are for the crew to use to de/rerail.  I use one very similar, I usually stand in the middle when I take visitors out on it so I can work the foot brake without breaking my leg from the pump handles going up and down, also when I'm solo on one so I can easily look in whatever direction I'm going (as well as so I wont pop a wheelie).  And you can get some pretty decent speed on it (the faster you go the easier it is to maintain speed).  Raced our train once while on a siding to 'show off' for the passengers, matched speed and was almost passing it before I had to hit the brakes.  Granted it was against a switcher with a max speed of 15mph that was slowing down to come into the station but still pretty impressive considering I was solo and am out of shape.

Sure I would love to see them in game I don't see what wrong with locomotives you'll have to repair it and it'll be hard and require resources and going on a train through an apocalypse is pretty cool and it'll be an awesome way of transportation.
