Fade to Black (Death Suggestion)

Recommended Posts

A relatively simple suggestion revolving around "how" you die or how you fall into a state of unconsciousness.

Now it's highly debatable about how the effect occurs after you die but I'm leaning more towards the effect that going to "blackness" isn't instant unless the brain is destroyed. I'm talking more about death by sickness, cold/heat and extreme bodily damage to where the brain is intact.

All in all, I think that when you start to fall unconscious it should be a fade to black instead of just instant, like an extremely rapidly gaining blurry screen followed by a sudden unconscious state.

Now unless you were shot in the head, body shots, death by bloodloss, sickness and death by hypo/hyperthermia should all be focused on a gradually blurring screen followed by a fading to blackness which its speed is dependant.

Another slight suggestion when your shot, some people have said in the past that gunshot victims that had recently died still had some reflex eye movements after they had been killed. I think this would give the player who died a last few seconds of their life before it would go black.

So what are your thoughts on this?

A lot of shooting deaths have the person just laying there as the body shuts down. Death isn't super quick unless you lose your heart or head. I'd support a "dying" character being able to slowly look around a bit. Don't want him to look around? Pop him again.

In my mind, certain deaths are just too sudden, you die from Hypothermia or starvation/thirst, you just keel over dead. Personally I think as a side effect of extreme near death, the body simply prevents the player from performing even simple tasks. Only way to end it is to simply "give up" or like the suicide function they put it, simply end it like that.

Plus it'd make for some killer immersion, having your friend propped up against a tree, bleeding out while you desperately rip up a shirt to try and save him in time.

I'd like to add that from a players perspective, perhaps add them having labored breathing, wheezing, some coughing and finally adding on the "death rattle" which is the last breaths of air escaping from the persons lungs before they drift off into the blackness of death. Then followed by the text of, "You are Dead"

That bullet to the brain 5 minutes prior is a mercy compared to what he's going through

Red Orchestra 2 does it pretty well, if you're mortally wounded, probably lungs/ major artery hit. You slow to a stop as your screen goes black, the sky starts getting very bright.

All you are able to manage in your final seconds is to pull the trigger releasing poorly aimed torrents of fire before you crumple to the ground dead.

Sometimes when you die quickly you maintain function of your eyes and see yourself ragdoll to the ground or roll back into the trench you just climbed from.

Animations of death throws also play and they moan as their blood stains the snow.

I would like a combination of these sorts of things, pupils dilating and letting in too much light from the sky, occasionally a view from first person as you flop on the floor, being able to manage a few things maybe slow crawl across the ground towards the gun that flew out of your hands as you were shot as you're bleeding out trying desperately to finish your attacker.

Ofcourse it should all depend on where and how badly you are hit, through the head should be instant black screen, maybe you don't even get to hear the bullet unless it's sub sonic.

Starving and dehydration death needs to be a much slower process, once you pass certain levels of poor condition you should begin to move slower, become injured much easier, trip, lose eye focus, and your head naturally tilts towards the ground. Meaning you want to really avoid this poor sort of state.

I'd like the chance to see my attacker if I'm shot without seeing them. It's frustrating to be looting only to hear the impact (not a gunshot) of a bullet followed by "you are dead". Would be nice if I was shot in the back and could look around for a few seconds before I bleed out.

Would also be cool if you could be saved in that time. Say you're shot in the chest and are basically dead, it should be possible for a friend to perform some emergency medical whatever to stabilise you to a point where you're effectively dead and can't really do anything, but have the chance to make a recovery (or just die anyway).

One more important aspect is death animation + ragdoll. You have great points, but it would really be boring if it was only visible for the dying character. Some struggling animations while the character is on the ground would be awesome.
