So recently I was thinking about how locking doors works in DayZ. Obviously a grown adult could open the door of a civilian home with brute force alone, but what about a prison door? They're obviously meant to withstand a beating. Personally, I believe they should only be opened with a high caliber bullet or a lock-pick. What do you guys think?

(BTW i'm talking about the prison doors in the military and police stations, for any of you that were wondering.)

Ya high caliber and lock pick for me. I doubt something like a .22 or 9mm is going to do much to them especially the .22.

I'd say certain melee weapons, high caliber bullets (not any but that was my vote), or the lockpick.  BUT I would say a chance of 'jamming' or damaging the lock when using a weapon rather than a lockpick so that when you do get it open you won't be able to pick/lock the door again till restart.  Or for certain doors (such as the jail cell) make them unopenable without say explosives.

I'd go with that.

If you break open any door, you shouldn't be able to lock it again. (Maybe there could be a way to repair some of the simpler doorways?)

As for jail cells, probably only sustained sledgehammer abuse should be effective without lockpick or key.

Are there prison buildings in this game?

If high caliber bullets were actually uncommon, the second option might carry some weight to it.

Didn't Mythbusters say that shooting a lock only fucks the lock up so much that you can't open it ever instead of shooting it off?

Bolt cutters/chainsaws/grenades only!
But you'd also need options to drive people out of locked rooms, perhaps with gas grenades, or smoke from fire on a stick combined with toxic items (?)

Yeah the military and police stations. They have cells inside.

Woops, sorry forgot to include that option. I'm sure a sledge might do some damage, but it would take a lot of hits I imagine.

Oh yeah. See when i think of a prison in a game I think of the big prisons like the one in Walking dead, or Nova prospekt in Half life

where the hell did you find that?, I have enough trouble finding a gun let alone ammo that goes with it!

Where is the "Certain melees/lockpick" only option?

High calibre weapons make locks harder to open

I want to point out here that shooting a lock is incredibly stupid. Shooting a soft metal (lead/copper) at a somewhat more resilient metal (iron/steel/brass/etc) is a really good way to shoot yourself with chunks of your own bullet bouncing off and coming back at you along with several other lock parts. Of course this isn't guarantee, your bullet might sail through the mechanism without much of a bother but shooting locks to open doors is generally considered a bad idea. It doesn't work the way it does in the movies.

When tac' teams or military groups breach doors with shotguns, they press the barrel against the door nearest to the hinges and just blast the door -surrounding- the metal hinges apart to the point where the door doesn't have any connection to said hinges and can be kicked in with ease. This is largely a wooden door tactic and I would think it's -very- situational.

That being said, I would love to find a use for the lockpick set I haul around on every new character. Might actually make some treasure troves of loot in some high chance spawn areas for weaponry because every other schmuck just fills his bag with nosh/drink/ammo.

I think you should be able to open a lock by using a lockpick (most silent), handheld tools (depending on lock in question) and high powered rounds that hit the right (very small) spot to open the gate and make it impossible to be locked again. You technically do not shoot the lock but rather blow away the mechnism that holds the door shut.

None of those should be instantly - lockpicks might require some fiddling (possible minigame) while tools and guns might require multiple uses.

Honestly in order to get an "authentic" feel for opening a door with a gun, I think would cause mass dev suicides. I mean you would have to program every door in the game to have hitboxes for the hinges/mechanisms (which by itself isn't difficult I imagine) and then program servers to recognize and keep track of which doors are broken/hinges shot off/etc until the next reset and then all the auxilaries like fail chance, consequences of failure, severity of failure depending on method...

Maybe just making doors lockable and unlockable viable lockpicks is more realistic from a programming standpoint at this juncture. x3

Or you could just reduce the current "damage hitbox" while also increasing the damage required to break the door by several means:

  • minimum damage required
  • resistance to particular damage types
  • absolute damage to break increased

So if you do not have enough raw power (while also hitting the right place) to open a lock you are down to using a lockpick. Sniping doors open from afar is stupid.

Now tracking of broken doors is indeed a lot of work and may or may not be worth it. However, I think there is also another mechanic that might take up a lot of work but definitely is worth it. I am speaking of login "deadzones":

  1. A completely locked area (room, house, hall etc.) creates a "deadzone" inside.
  2. If you want to login inside a deadzone you will be spawned outside instead.
  3. If you log out inside a deadzone it will store your player ID and allow you to login inside.

This should prevent players from ghosting inside locked areas (maybe without even knowing) and also solves the "surprise prison" problem where a player either gets trapped inside a room with no means of getting out without technically getting locked in - which in return allows for locks that actually need more than fists and time to be opened.

As someone who has spent some time on the wrong side of a locked jail coor, I can assure you, these things cannot be opened without keys or some form of explosive. Even kicking at the lock or hinges for hours on end doesn't budge them at all. Remember these things are designed to keep people inside who have nothing but time on their hands.
