261 hours of dayz from Smartsham

Hello all,

DISCLAIMER: I do know this game is in the alpha phase. These comments are not meant to downplay any work done by the dev crew or players in the quest to finish this game. It is simply meant to advise would be players on the type of game play I have come to know and might be expected.

Advice from Smartsham: solo/so so survivor

1. If you don't have friends who are willing to play with you, don't play, period.
I have yet to make a friend in day z. Even after numerous attempts, hands up, talking, naked, unarmed, and that one time running naked down the coast blaring "Sewer Surfin" over my mic. I almost always get shot and killed or wounded, or cuffed and left. Most players roll in packs, so beware of anyone as they probably have somone waching their back. If they are solo, they will probably just side with caution and shoot you on sight.

2. At this point in development, the survival aspect is easy and boring. (Or stupid and broken, depending on who you ask)

If you are looking for fun in survival, this probably is not there yet. As long as you find a remote pond and build a fire, you can basically live forever.

3. If you don't have a computer tailored for gaming that is newer that about winter '13, stay away.

Im sure with some older tech you could manage to play the game at a fun pace. As with any game, to boost performance you must sacrifice detail. Attention to detail is key in this game and you will only end up dying without knowing who killed you or why.

4. 9 out of 10 times, death is unexpected and/or unwarented:

I am sure i am not the only one who has died countless times without knowing why or how.

5. In game sounds are still very buggy and it can be hard to tell fact from bug:

I have mistaken buggy global server sounds for people, and thought those same people were bugs. It never ends well.

6. It is highly unlikely you will recover your corpse:
Seriously, if you are not on a team, you just wont be able to.

7. Your character is bitchier than a newborn and requires constant upkeep:

Hope this balances out more with time. I cant remember the last time i drank 5 canteens in a day let alone 3 hours.

8: Don't get attached to anything, gear, the map, nothing, it will change:

There are a lot of places on the map even that are not the same. RIP NEAF.

9: All you need is a firefighter or splitting axe and some flashy dance moves and the zombies are a joke

Luck is also required.

10: For an unfinished product, it does have its moments:
There are things that are fun about DAYZ. I have had a few experiences that i thought memorable.

Even though i think the game is getting boring/rinse repeat(only slower) I do feel it is an accurate representation of what a post apocalyptic world would be. You wouldn't trust anyone but your friends. You would horde anything you see as useful. You would avoid other people at all costs, even if it means killing them. Anyone who doesn't know you will assume you are a bandit and need to be killed (accept Sancho, live well man!). And for some reason zucchini can be eaten raw and is everywhere and there is no cheese at all.

Oh yeah...

11. There is no Cheese.
Seriously, no cheese. No cheddar bricks, balls of mozzarella, colby jack, brie, no Kraft slices that are individually packed, no bread sticks or crackers with dipping cheese, not even...easy cheese...no cheese.

Hope this is useful to somone. If you do have any advice for me please post below. Have fun out there survivors!

200 + hours and you have still not made a friend?

i made one just today. i walked into the police station as he was walking out. we both shat ourselves and ran the opposite direction.after watching for a little while, i went up to him. one thing i didn't do was scream out "I AM FRIENDLY" that seems to ruin it. just approach people, and be kind. i we traded gear and stories, and went together for about 45 minutes. i told him i was logging off, and even told him where to show him i trusted him. when i logged back on, my guy was still there.

most of the people that you meet will not try to kill you straight out if you have had a chance to shoot them and don't, or you are just nice to them. does alot for your life span...

good luck!!!

There's absolutely nothing in game that requires refrigeration other than raw meat which is produced only after a mammal/animal is freshly gutted.

Why would anything that would spoil be around in the apocalypse long after the power went out (thanks to everyone bitching and moaning about street lights being on in the big cities)?  Really wouldn't make any sense.  Unless it was literally the day the power went off, anything refrigerated would go bad, considering it's not winter in Chernarus.

"It is highly unlikely you will recover your corpse."

Your not supposed to be able to recover your corpse, it's your corpse.

I would go further than that: I've suggested this before, and I still believe it'd be better if players got booted off a server when they died and locked out for 24 hours. New life, new server, new loot locations, new opponents, etc.

I don't agree with #3. I play on a Macbook that's going on 3 years old (and came out closer to 4 years ago) and I play the game just fine on reasonable settings. I can even run at full-tilt if I'm not somewhere heavily urban.

If you had sex with your corpse, would it be considered as incest or masturbation?
