MRE Food

Recommended Posts

Ok, before I start, I just wanted to give ALL the credit to biggb45s because he gave me the idea to post this, so thanks biggb45s!

Now lets begin...

MREs would be another type of food that could be added into DayZ, they would spawn in train stations, jails, and firefighter stations "uncommonly" and they would be common in ALL military loot locations, all buildings at airfields, barracks, etc.

In real life MREs are made to energize and hydrate the consumer. So one MRE would be equivalent to, I don't know, two and a half full canned peaches? Because canned peaches hydrate and energize you. MREs would do the same, except more efficiently. I don't know why they wouldn't or shouldn't, for that matter, be added into DayZ. They are perfect! If there is anyone that thinks otherwise, I am all ears. Really I am, because I don't see anything wrong with adding MREs in.

While I'm not against the idea, MRE's are often very Western orientated, being primarily in use by US armed Forces and would be a bit strange to find them in a Eastern European Army Barracks. However perhaps Ration Packs from other nations could be considered, Like the Russian or Ukranian Army Ration.

In addition to this, most games depict US MRE's and other rations as single use items. Perhaps instead they can be like the actual MRE and have a larger list of food inside them. For example, a standard US MRE holds

  • Main course
  • Side dish
  • Dessert or Snack
  • Crackers or Bread
  • Spread of Cheese, peanut butter or jelly
  • Powdered drink mix: fruit flavored drink, cocoa, coffee, tea, sports drink and dairy shake
  • Utensils
  • Flameless Ration Heater
  • Beverage mixing bag
  • Accessory pack:
    • Chewing Gum
    • Water-resistant Matchbook
    • Napkin / toilet paper
    • Moist towelette
    • Seasonings, including salt, pepper, sugar, creamer and tobasco sauce

So MRE's actually contain quite a few items and it would be a shame if they were just one use items, it would add immersion and make MRE's an excellant food source if they are extremely rare. Russian and Ukranian Rations packs often contain more food in them compared to MRE's but are large and bulky, somewhere between 4-5 canned tins worth of food (primarily beef and pate), ontop of dry crackers and some beverages (usually powdered mixes) as well as a vitamin tablet (which is apparently common in most Rations Packs made in post soviet countries)

In addition I could see US MRE's spawning at Chopper Crash Sites while other Ration packs like the Russian or Ukrainian Army Rations can spawn in regular Military buildings. The downsides between the two would be evident, you have the Russian/Ukranian Ration which is quite bulky and takes up alot of space in the backpack or the US MRE which is nice and compact and doesn't take up as much room.
