3D Scopes using PiP (Pictures In Pictures)

Recommended Posts

After seeing this: http://www.dayztv.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/dayz-v3s-truck-rear-mirrors-feature-w-i-p-dayz-standalone.jpg , i was asking myself if it would be possible do make scopes having a 3D effect just like this http://youtu.be/xaTS5UF_2yI?t=10m5s , in arma 3 someone made it possible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mij9Fy2VRcI. It would make sniping more immersive in first person.

PS: Sorry for all english mistakes

Peter and Chris commented on it quite recently, essentially yes it's possible but there will be a performance impact, they will test it after the new renderer is in and see how big of a performance impact it has.

Want this :) Like how it is in for example Insurgency or Red Orchestra.

I'm no game developer, but I can't imagine this being that hard or hardware-demanding to implement.
Then again, if the game developers say it is hard, it probably is. :D

I think it looks a bit odd. When I look through a (tele)scope I tend to close the other eye and even if i do open it the scoped view will be to the right not in the middle.

I'm not saying the scopes are great atm but there was a better arma3 scope video posted before that seemed a lot more realistic. (No idea where it is sorry)

Well you would have no peripheral vision when looking through a scope IF you have your eye sealed to the lens. A BIG no-no when using a telescopic sight on a weapon of any sort.

There's a 4 in or so spacing that should be between the lens and your eye called the Eye Relief.

Example:scopeguide_relief_232x177.jpg

With eye relief, you're able to see a small area around the outside of the lens that is not magnified, while still having a magnified center. Hence the PIP effect.

Depends on the shooter / technique and the type of scope used,

But even with one eye closed you'd have some level of peripheral vision

This. And to resemble this ingame, they should blur the unmagnified part of the screen pretty much, because your eye aiming down the scope would focus on the magnified part.

That's kind of what I was getting at. I've seen an arma3 mod that achieves this better than the ones posted but unfortunately can't find it.

It wasn't that exact video but that's a million times better. I think that's probably the same mod I'm thinking of. to me that's perfect bar the shouting.

Yup these scopes are way more useful compared to the vanilla scopes yet so many people here would consider them a downgrade.

The scopes in the video are all 2d scopes thus better performance crisper reticles and correct ballistic drop reticle.

Why everyone wants 3d scopes or even pip scopes if beyond me.

2d scopes work fine in fact they work far better than any 3d scopes I have ever used in any game.

Red Orchestra does this very well. It'd be nice to see.
