Bows, bows and bows.

Recommended Posts

So get this, it doesn't seem like we are getting a change to the bow swaying anytime soon or as I suspect, ever. So why not make it better for the people who use archery like me in DayZ? Such as a lot of weapons have easy ways to reload and such, Magnum has the speedloader. Shotgun and Blaze have snaploaders. Mosin? 5 round clip. Anything from an AKM to a PM-73 RAK (if they were easy to obtain/obtainable whatsoever) have a way to reload if you have a mag in your inventory and the one in your gun is empty.

Even the crossbow has a almost instant reload option with the bolt quiver. Why can't it be used for an Improvised Ashwood Bow? It's kind of silly and there should also be hip quivers or back quivers so whenever this new bow reload animation is released, he's actually grabbing the arrow from a source not from thin air. Also get rid of the magical fairy spark that I've seen with the new reload animation, please. Second off I want more bows to come to DayZ, such as a maple Long Bow or something of the sort would be nice to see.

Maybe one that can't fit into a bag because of its size. And also it would be more powerful than the Improvised bow because it hasn't been made with simple rope and stick, it would actually be found within houses like other weapons and such already crafted (hopefully professionally much like the other weapons you find naturally occuring within the game.)

Also compound bows, much easier to shoot than a traditional longbow/recurve bow because all of the force is taken off by the wheels/cam making it an easier draw which if you didn't have to hold back the force of the draw as much, the sway could be controlled a lot more.. Also, if tweaked properly the cam can make an arrow shoot further and more accurate (at a risk of making the bow harder to draw/ it could snap if not tweaked properly.)

This would make bows more desirable in game simply due to the fact that it would be a simplified weapon to use in maybe a combat scenario, nobody wants that long sway with the Improvised bow that can make the difference between life or death, if they miss because the sway is not furthest left, then they have to wait and ready another arrow meaning their opponent could have already shot them or could be getting ready to attack.

Still in addition to bows, take-down bows, easily to break down and section for more simplified storage. Meaning you could find it in chunks to combine together to form the whole part which would make it more rare but would also help even out the playing fields of every weapon. This take-down bow could be collapsed into a 8 vertical slot holder until it is fully extended out again. Last but not least, different arrow heads, different shaft and feather colors as well. Broad head vs. Bodkins for heads. Maybe explosive tip arrows or flaming arrows (grenade duct taped to composite arrow, or rags dipped in fuel lit tied to composite arrow either to be lit or hit an open flame source and make a bigger flame.) Different colored arrows instead of the white composite arrows. I like that their easy to spot when you misfire but I also want to have my own signature arrow. Maybe spray paint the arrows to your preferable color (black, green, camo, etc.) And also the ability to spray paint your feathers which could also have a signature look such as the same colors already listed.

IF you feel I missed anything or made a mistake please reply just keep in mind its almost 3 in the morning here.

Bows the devteam should consider

A recurve bow

Some kind of old longbow that also goes with the sword that's in the files

A reflex bow

A takedown bow that is able to take up around as much space as an SMG/74u

And a compond bow that personally look kinda weird

Proper bow animations for when its slung on your back, not lame bow mechanics, quivers. One can dream.

A recurve bow in my opinion is a must, something that offsets the traditional home-made variant with a modern variant you can find in Resident Areas.

For the longbow I think it should be something like an upgrade for the Ashwood Short Bow, using more refined materials in some way to boost it's effectiveness. Like of like how you can upgrade the courier with wooden sticks, I think the ashwood short bow should become a long bow when using more refined materials. The benefits I believe would be more range and more power.

I don't think we need a Reflex Bow nor a takedown Bow, rather I think we should be able to take down an Ashwood Short Bow into it's basic form to allow us to fit it back into a backpack.

A compound bow is something that would be nice to have but I'd imagine it would be a rare residential spawn, you can only fire composite arrows from it though and it would be the most powerful of the bows with the longest range, in addition you can actually fit a sight to the compound bow in addition to a stabiliser, to make aiming at a distance far easier but at the same time they require more delicate handling as they are perhaps the most "complex" of the bows and require specialised means in repair.

Take this image for example of a description of a modern Compound Bow:

stock-photo-hunter-aims-a-compound-bow-a

Here it's outfitted with a stabiliser (which reduces sway and improves accuracy), quiver and a marksman sight (which gives ranges allowing you a better chance to judge where the arrow might land)

Like the idea of compound but all bows should be added. The realism of the improvised ashwood is make believe. If you can find a branch or limb of a tree and take your mediocre rope and make a bow from it, then  you sir need a cookie. Most rope doesn't have enough torque or pressure to launch and arrow or even make the limbs flex for a drawback. Which is why a traditional longbow implemented would be outstanding.

Waste of resources imo nobody will use the bows and in the end they will still be dodgy in their implementation

i'd like a passive training mechanic where if you make one bow the next bow you make is a little better.

not grindy training thorugh.

Bow mechanics will obviously be improved in the coming months, especially with a new animation system that allows them to be fired on the move and smoother animation transitions.

I mean, I don't think we need most of what OP said but at least a compound bow at some point would be nice.

Plus you yourself are a strong advocate of having the game be less focused on firearms and military grade clothing and more on improvised/survivor like equivalents, and having some form of pre-apocalypse manufactured bow would allow for that immensely. So I'm not sure why you disapprove of having at least one bow.

Why not? Sure, it's not a weapon for PVP, but it's a weapon to survive.

@OP: I would like to see a longbow, which is more accurate and powerful then the improvised bow, too.
Compound or takedown bows would be nice to have but isn't a must (for me). Spray paint arrows, etc. should be implemented.
I think they will improve the bow(s) and gameplay around it later in development.

I...don't think you people quite understand just how difficult bows actually are to make. Bow-making is an art, and requires knowledge of physics. Get the dimensions of the bowstave and limbs incorrect just a tine bit, and it will probably explode due to the forces involved the first time you try to draw the thing. (HINT: personal experience with this).

I've made several threads on bows, arrows, and quivers before.

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/220374-primitive-equipment-possibilities-and-such/

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215247-quiver-arrows/

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/205753-archery-bows-arrows-etc/

Right now, I am working on a "flatbow", probably the easiest style of "self-bow" (that is, a bow carved from a single piece of wood) to make, and self-bows are themselves the "simplest" bow to make. From start to now (and I am only about halfway done), it has taken me about 4 months, between final seasoning, measuring, cutting, and shaping the limbs. I still have a lot of work

In reality, I would choose to make a spear over a bow in a survival situation, almost every time. Spears are multi-functional, and compared to the bows that are practical to make in a survival situation (read: bundle bows), have almost the same range and more killing power when thrown

Beg to differ with you. I for one use the improvised bow as bad as it is and I love it. With new implementations of animations and other bows it will attract a much larger spectrum of people.

I don't currently use the improvised bow. but I desperately want a viable bow in the game. My preference would be for a relatively compact recurve (as opposed to a long bow),  but I'd take anything that works. It's the perfect compliment to a player with a stealthy play style (like me) and it would also be great for mounted play (if horses ever become a thing).

I've tinkered with the crossbow, but the bolts are scarcer than hens teeth. I'm not going to lug that damn thing around, with only two bolts in my inventory.

Come on devs, show the bow some love!

I too play the stealthy way and I love it so much. I also have used the crossbow but found the lack of damage sickening, the reload animation makes  me want to vomit.. Add a 160 lb draw to one and let us tear ass. And also I want an English Longbow in game, able to penetrate everything currently in game except for the plate carrier vest (if we're talking realistically here."

Got to disagree too, I am having great fun living the quiet life and moving from town to town, hunting animals with my bow and arrow and generally living as long as possible.. More bows would make the mechanic more interesting and mix it up a little and I think a lot of people would use the bow if it was more polished and useful in general.. But I am currently using it exclusively and loving it!
