There was this single reddit post where Torchia said something about DayZ being part of Armaverse and that there were NATO forces in that country etc. I mean it was single, not very complex post and that's it. It's as devs did not think about it much at all.

How? It was the most substantive statement we've had about DayZ lore and the background of Chernarus, ever.

Do you want them to write a book about it?

I very much doubt they're going to elaborate on Dayz lore, as we're all survivors and have no clue what caused the outbreak, just that it didn't kill us outright. It's part of the fun, everyone has the ability to create their own theory.

I don't expect them to elaborate on it (though I'd rather they do), but some simple fundamentals would be great for context.

What year it is, is a big one.

Establishing the ARMA II link is huge as well, I'm glad it was done.

Personally, I'd rather the player be the one uncovering the lore via the environment. But the environment, as yet, doesn't tell us a story.

The game is set in current day.

I really wish the game was set in 1991 right at the fall of the Soviet Union.

The fall of the Soviet Union would lead to a really cool setting.

Wish they would define the year, don't think the DayZ team ever really thought about it. Their is nothing but huge CRT TV's and not a single laptop to be seen. Make it 90's.

The FNPs and Magpul attachments pretty well rule out a 90s setting.

Yea that is very unfortunate, wouldn't mind if they chucked all that stuff, I mean we see the houses and incredibly backwards cities far more than we ever see M4 parts.

Single not very complex reddit post, that majority of folks most likely even did not see, is just not enough to describe DayZ SA background.

Even your own  post about about specific military forces was FAR more complex and that was just made up fanfiction with zero real value, since it was not from devs.

Think what you will, it seems that devs are not bothered about DayZ SA background much.

Having just one pitiful post proves it.

But yeah, let's argue for sake or agument shall we? :-).

It is set in the present day, but in a strong socialist setting making it possible to mistake the time setting for early 90'.

In game there is a billboard for the movie Escape from KolgujevThe date of the premiere is 29/8/2009.

Something must have disrupted Chernarus around that time, because the billboard was never replaced with a newer one.  The disruption could have been the civil war though, not necessarily the outbreak of the infection.

So the date in game is almost certainly after 2009.

Just because every home in this rural country doesn't have a iPhone or 52' 1080p LCD TV doesn't mean it's set in the past.  I can go down to my local school (which is in America) and find an old CRT TV and or monitor.

Why does it need to be complex?

Besides, that's not the only evidence. There is also Chedaki (ArmA 2 Communist insurgent faction that opposed the CDF) gear, including a beret with their red star.

They don't need to say anything more than "DayZ rides on the back of ArmA 2" for that to be true. They don't need to explain the whole damn plot to you for it to be true.

My personal opinion:

one could argue that dayz takes place after the last events on the timeline relating to A2/OA, since it would seem odd that there is no mention anywhere among the campaigns or ANN reports of a society-crushing virus, which would put dayz in late 2013 at the earliest.

AND

I tend to view dayz as a parallel universe since I feel like having to incorporate a zombie apocalypse between the time of A2 and A3 feels a bit...cheese for the otherwise serious-feeling ArmA3.

Does that mean we may get some ArmA 3 gear?

Haha, just kidding, but that's probably the best estimate. I don't know why people want to say it's the 90s, that would require almost half of the game's content to be removed in order for it to actually make sense

In every single house and town and building in your neighbourhood too? Not if you specifically go to an underfunded school in the ghetto?

Chernarus is depicted as a very poor country and well off citizens who would have access to finer luxury items would most likely be in the capital,Novigrad which is not part of the dayz map.

I fail to see why adding more complex background to DayZ would hurt anything?

It just seems devs don't want to bother, that is all.

This is probably the closest we'll get to a 'cannon' answer.  DayZ takes place in a branching timeline after the Events of Arma2, possibly even indirectly caused by the events in Arma2.

When playing dayz, I always saw classic cars classic weapons and other old stuff. This let me to wonder what time period the apocolypse is in. My guess 1982-1999. Now I posted this as a GENERAL DISCUSION its not an idea or suggestion just a little thing I would like to ask.... What do YOU think

Some time after 2009. Possibly present day or very near future.

The Arma 2 campaign takes place in 2009, which forms part of the DayZ backstory. There are old vehicles because Chernarus is a post-Soviet backwater.

Uh, what?

It happens after ARMA II, AKA 2009-2012. So, pretty recently.

What do you mean by "classic cars and weapons and other old stuff"? The only "old" weapons are the 91/30 Mosin Nagant and the IZH-42 shotgun. The cars are all post-Soviet POS, and none of the other weapons are really that old.
