(Only played a bit of the mod, forgive me for being a newbie about it)

So, if I understood everything right, private shards are the legalized version of the currently (reportable) servers that some people have for them and their friends to farm on? The the thing that shouldn't be understimated is the amount of money people will throw at the game. A lot of kids (mentality, not age wise) will have 0 issue spending their/their parents' money on a server where they can farm gear then hop onto a 40 man server and wreak havoc. I'm not sure this is good for the game in the long or short run (unless I misunderstood everything).

But that is the nature of shards. Your current character (on the public hive) will never load on any other shard than the public hive, the same way your stable character will never load on an experimental server, or even regular characters on hardcore servers. Those are all different shards.

Thanks for clearing that up. Believe it or not I haven't read anything that says you can't play a private shard 3PP player on anything other than a 3PP private shard server and only one server correct? So basically the private shard is like a watered down private hive? Very little clarification out there and I would hate to speculate as the details have been a bit ambiguous.

So how is it going to work when the private hive comes into play? Wouldn't it be confusing for there to be a private shard and a private hive?

Seems a bit pointless to do anything 'private' w/o the modding community involved.

I don't really know anything about private hives or modding.

The shards will be specific to your server(s). Your private server(s) will be on a different shard than someone else's server therefore you will have different characters for your own shard and some other private server.

I like to take whatever date is implied by whatever dev and add month. Then add two weeks and its about right.

Announcements about new features and content should be filed into two categories in your mind: "near future" and "sometime down the road". Anyone trying to give an exact timeline is wasting their breath, and trying to hold anyone to a deadline is rather pointless. It is what it is.

If they were in the mod, then it is safe to asume, that there will be in the standalone too.

Nothing should be assumed. Ever.

The reason private hives are/were common for the mod is mainly due to hacking.  If they can get hacking under control (which seems to be a focus now), I'd personally rather play a public official server because then you eliminate shitty admin abuse as well (something that with private hives was potentially as bad or worse than the hackers).

I gave the Mod a try a few months back and didn't like it for this very reason. I didn't really have any bad experiences with admins, I just quickly grew tired of all the hoops you had to jump through to even find and play on a decent server. I played an "Overpoch" variant specifically and didn't care for how anything worked compared to the Standalone.

The admins should still have some power, but I'm undecided yet as to what I want them to be capable of.

I have doubts and I'll explain why...

Power is needed and is a must to run a sound server. Abuse of power has dire consequences now that incentives are practically non-existent.  The thing that is going to circumvent server abuse is the lack os control over the loot economy. People abused power and got away with it in the mod because they could offer 500+ vehicles, donator/custom load outs, self blood bag mumbo jumbo and etc. Now that shit is no longer a viable option, some snot nosed brats are going to have to learn the hard way…meaning there is going to be crickets and tumble weeds on their servers once the word gets out. At the price point servers are currently at, admin abuse won't last long.

Agreed. Few will be able to afford to waste RL money for their own gain in-game.

You just completely changed what I understood "shards" to be. Your definition matches what all of us have been referring to as "hives" up to this point.

I don't really know what's up with the name change, honestly. I think it might be because you will be basically using a part (shard) of the central hive that is hosted by BI and you won't have direct access to the database itself. That's just me guessing based on what's said in the dev blogs though.

So - is the difference between a hive and a shard something like follows?

  1. Hive - central database hosted by Bohemia, the basis of anything persistent. The hive is made up of shards.
  2. Shard - the portion of the hive to which server(s) are assigned. A character in shard A will persist in any server in shard A, but not shard B, C, etc. Today in general there are 2 shards for stable branch, 1pp and 3pp. You can currently have up to 2 survivors on stable, 1 on 1pp and 1 on 3pp.

If that's correct (I don't know if it is) I have other questions:

  1. Are Stable 1pp and 3pp different shards (not different hives)?
  2. Are experimental and stable on different hives or different shards?
  3. Are additional hives ever expected, that wouldn't be hosted by Bohemia?

Now that I think about it, a name change does kind of make sense. "Private" in the sense of the Standalone will not be the same as "private" was in the Mod, so it makes sense that you would call it something different in order to distinguish that fact.

1. Yes

2. I believe they're shards also.

3. I have no idea. Nobody does really, afaik.

Private Hives and Private Shards are different things (although similar):

A private hive uses the admins/servers own private database not managed by the devs, so a server admin can do whatever they want with the database. This is what we had in the mod and why admins could spawn in loot, change loot tables, see player locations, sell items etc as all that information is in the database which they controlled and could modify.

A private shard operates on a separate shard of the central database (run by the devs), this allows communities to have their own private servers without it affecting the main public shard and without giving server owners direct access to the database. The system is also flexible enough so that a group of servers could run on this shard of the hive too (or just one single server). See hardcore shard for example.

This gives the best of both having a database and having a private community, without those private communities affecting the main public shard. Players would only be able to jump between servers on that private shard and as such admins will be able to enforce their own rulesets and have a few more options available to them like being able to lock the server, implement whitelists, ban players etc.
