Increase Chernarus size with the new engine.

Recommended Posts

From a technical point of view...

While it may be technically possible, it would involve a huge amount of work and would essentially require them to remake the map from scratch so it's not likely to happen. See SenChi's response from an interview below.

Q: Will the actual size of the map ever increase?
A: Unfortunately we are limited by the physical size of map that was set at the Chernarus for Arma 2 (15.360km x 15.360 km) long time ago, perhaps in the future we will find a way to extend the border, but right now talking about it too early.

Rocket did throw around some ideas early on about how they could allow players to travel between maps in-game, maybe by boat for example where you would essentially load into another server/map, dunno if that's been discussed any further though.

Although I do not like loading map sections, I can't help but love the idea of this.  My only fear is the coast line littered with rifle baring killers.

really dislike the fact that The Edge Of The Map is so close to new high traffic areas.

To my mind, you want as few players as possible to see this place - for reasons of immersion and authenticity -  and there should be a significant area of "nothing much" around the western and northern borders in order to minimize the likelihood of players witnessing the environment's limitations first hand.

I agree, however jumping from one server to the other or from one map to the other will still be a loading screen in between so its ok. I'm sure later on they can come up with a solution like a certain distance from each border of the map will give you an option to port to another map. Say All the West side of the map from South to North would allow you to travel to Namalsk and the East border (all water) would allow you to travel to Taviana for example. This would give a bigger gap to travel instead one small road that allows campers to just sit and wait.

No you missed the point, entirely.

Used for what exactly - go on, let's hear how you tell us the game should be tailored around you.

Have I once said that I want it to be tailored the way I want it?

I have just short of 2k hours in the mod, and 1200 in SA. If I was one of those stamp your feet and QQ on the forums every time I died to a bug, pretty sure I would have never made it past 100 on either.

I'm saying what is the point in extending the map, and turtling development even more? The plan they have now is about the best you could hope for? Why do we need another 10 20 or 30ks added? It could only be North or West since South and East are coastal.. I just don't see the point on expanding the map, When there's a metric fuckton of unused map as there is..

I'd rather them spend more time developing New systems or expanding on existing ones, than have a tiny bit more of the map that's never going to get used.

Still waiting for a a decent medical system, That shit hasn't been mentioned in ages, and they avoid the question in the dev stream like it's the fuckin' plague.

This is what I interpreted as an engine limitation for DayZ. Maybe it's something else entirely though...

I am mainly worried that when the map will get filled up with cities, there won't be enough space left in the world for people to do construction, and hiding gear. Especially now that maximum level cap will be increased to like, what, 150?

Another problem is that debug land at times prevents the game from looking it's best. Cities like Novodmitrovsk border directly with debug,  and could be used as an excuse for putting a huge lake or mountain in between. DayZ lacks in a huge scenery, and small things like that will eventually bring the game to the next generation.

Most them map isn't used as it is.. Making it bigger will just result in less activity in the already dying areas..

I'd rather them spend more time on the existing towns instead of making new areas in the map, then making new towns..

You don't like the same buildings being Ctrl+C Ctrl+V everywhere?

I hope that the new engine allows us to have higher res, less compressed textures. Some textures look ok, whereas others look like they are kinda from 1998.
