I want more zombies....but I still want them to run...imagine what we have now but a horde of 15, 20,25,30 slowly building behind you as you try to loose them through a town.

Now imagine walking zombies....one spots you....you sit down and watch it amble towards you eating beans thinking "meh cba wasting the ammo, il go for a pee then run away.

The only place slow zombies do well is linier games, where you have a confined "corridor" style level. That way they are all focused in to one place. Theres no corner for them to back you into in chernarus so they need to be fast to be a threat :)

Yes! And there is the simple fact that a group of fifty slow zombies could be a threat if you couldn't out maneuver and out distance them so easily as you have described. There is also the fact that the engine cant support a mob of zeds that big at the moment. version .48 was better because they simulated larger numbers via a fast zombie re spawn rate and the fact that they would chase you forever. I got chased from the south side of the NW AF all the way north to the storage lockers and hog barns 400m to the east of Zaprudno. They were all second third and fourth generation zombies that could see you at 600m. I must have shot those three zeds three times each (and they always re-spawn as a different type). In the end I got them to bunch up in a barn and waxed them all in the 5 second limit and then hauled ass.

But to make guys/gals like Magafe happy perhaps the Devs might consider making them a 'weak sister' mode that they can thrive in.

Ignore "noob" its such a stupid insult. Put into a sentence its basically "your not good at this game cos you are new to it"....what do peeps expect. They should remember....we were all noobs once....in every game we ever played. Teach, don't hate.

Anyways it seems your main gripe is that they are buggy fast. Buggy dosent mean abandon the initial vision. It means work at it, refine it....achieve the goal. Don't just cop out with a lame half assed fix *cough* combat log system *cough* ;)

Lore says they should be fast

Gameplay says they should be fast

Im interested how you could see slow movers being threatening, unless they exist in dead rising style numbers I just cant see it, and even then whats to stop me just running away into the trees?

Another thing to think about is that the nav for the zombies is sort of a prototype, there will be updates to it and it should improve more and more. Would you be happy with fast Z's if they weren't buggy?

noob? lol been playing dayz for a while now. But If i'm consider a noob because you don't like my opinion on something then ok.

Read the tea leaves Magafe not many people agree with you on this slow zombie shit. The zombies we have had since .49 was introduced are easy as hell to kill and evade. Do I hate the idea of slow zeds in all situations? No! The forest is a good place for slow silent zeds to jump out from between the trees at you. Take a run over to the Black Forest at night (without the contrast and brightness all cranked up) and see what I mean.

And what is a NOOB anyway? I've logged 947 hours in 1st person mode alone and to some I am a NOOB. What really made me think of you as a NOOB is your inability to refrain from making it personal because your 'Idea' was scoffed at by the majority. (How many times do you think we have heard your suggestion?)

In this thread your pros have been effectively annihilated so please expand on the real reason you want slow harmless zeds. Are you having a tough time dealing with the castrated Zeds that we have had since .49 was introduced?  Now, if they decided to populate dark interior structures with a good number slow ambush zeds that would be spooky and fun to clear them out floor by floor. But those shouldn't re-spawn for a good while after being killed. Remember what works for Romero or Frank Darabont  in a movie or TV series won't always work in a computer game.

Until the day comes when DayZ makes better use of your graphics card and isn't so CPU dependent you will not see huge mobs of Zombies. Because of the limitations of the engine for now the Zombies must be fast and re-spawn to be a threat.

play the dayz mod find a server that says walking dead as a feature and see they are a joke plain and simple. So what if your gears ruined get more. I'm not gonna call you a noob but I will say that your excuses seem to be of a man that doesn't like a challenge or you are lazy and if your only real complaint is about them being buggy in a game still in alpha(yes I said it) then as one of the above posters said play dead rising or LF4D. I personally think once its done and they are running attacking and hoarding like they have planned there's going to be a lot of butt hurt about them mainly because folks can't camp stupid spots and spit mosin rounds with out consequences. And can't run to the nearest large town to get fully geared in a matter of minutes with out first thinking hmmmmm do I wanna risk having 50 zeds chasing my ass down what's my exit strategy if this goes down hill fast, what am I going to do if I get trapped in a building on the roof so forth if they walked or shambled you would never have to think of those things in the end you would only use weapons for humans and the zeds would just be fodder only time you get attacked is if your stupid and go AFK to piss which in dayz going AFK should be something you do not do out of the fear that you'll come back to the you are dead screen. final note in the black and white romero classic night of the living dead the women figures out hey I think we can just walk right past them and she does yes she shoots a few but no threat I love the movie but really even she figured out that shamblers are a joke. tried to find that scene but can't its right near the end when she leaves and runs into the defense force who then come back and kill the African American dude(which was sad he was my favorite character).

I agree 100% gannon46

NOTLD 1990

Barbra, "They're so slow...we can just walk right by them."

NOTLD !968,

Reporter, "If I was surrounded by 6 or eight of these things would I have a chance?"

The Chief, "There's no problem if you have a gun shoot them in the head if not get a club or a torch..beat them or burn them they go up pretty easy."

Reporter,  "are they slow moving Chief"

The Chief, "yeah they're dead, they're all messed up."

*************************************************************

However that is not the lore that DayZ follows, 28Days later is at least a chapter of the bible. ------FAST ZOMBIES----->

I hope we don't have to sink to 'Night Of The Living Bread'

Slow zombies would be cool if they were only in hordes or very rare.

Perhaps the zombies could be like 28 Days Later where they eventually starve to death, slow moving ones haven't had a good snack in a long time and have some sort of pack intelligence to try get food better,

Other than that we need zombies that won't be able to chase us for miles and miles, their stamina and hawkeye vision is insane, if you keep running sure they slow down but it's more like they get bored than anything else if you stop, even when they're a tiny dot on your screen, even if it's when you're zoomed in they'll run at you all that distance.

It's kind of silly and unreasonable that this messed up infected creature could have infinite stamina when it's body shouldn't have the energy to run so much.

Certainly hope they don't plan on leaving zombies stamina the way it is, a healthy human being should not have issues running away from them.

I'd rather have fast zombies. Slow zombies aren't threatening, and they aren't a threat. Fast zombies are much more intimidating, and much more of a threat to your life. You'd be terrified if you had a horde of fast zombies behind you. Slow zeds? Not so much.

We don't need slow zombies. As other have already pointed out they wouldn't be scary or dangerous, they'd be easy to kill and escape.

If anything we need more zombies. We just need them to be a lot less buggy. Which will happen in time. An interaction with even one zombie should be exactly like something from 28 days later. Not to hard to deal with but still dangerous and always to be taken seriously,  more than one should be terrifying, at this point you should be panicking about how you're going to deal with them. Any more than three should be a really bad situation to be in. Near certain death if you're alone with no guns.

The only thing I'd recommend is the ability to hide after breaking line of site, they should be instinctive but not completely stupid. If I run around a house and hide in a shed and 5 seconds later they all come around after me they should spread out looking for you, for like 10 minutes, you could choose to stay hidden until they disperse and calm down, you could try and sneak away or if you have a good melee weapon you could try and take one or two out and even the numbers a little. Though if you smash ones head in with a lead pipe and there is another one very near by he should hear you and come running screaching and wailing.

Zombie AI needs to be improved drastically.

A gun shot should draw them in a certain direction where they enter a search pattern. they should rely on LoS for chase purposes, sounds should make them move in the sounds general direction.

walking shouldn't send them into a run, but it should get them to look in the sounds direction and start actively looking.

The combat system still needs serious work, many times i've snuck up behind a zed, swung 2-3 times and it just whiffed. that needs to be fixed.

Zombies should move slowly when they are investigating a noise and get rabid and fast when they obtain sight on the living.

I should be able to break line of sight and have them enter a frantic search pattern, not beeline through 2 houses directly at me.

i dont mind the sprinting zombies so much, its the haveing to run FOREVER to get away from them if you dont have an ax to kill them. they should make all the weapons atleast semi effective while trying to kill the zombies..  i shouldnt have to hit a zombie 12 times with a shovel while running in a circle for 3 minutes just to kill it

Yeah... like i said, slow zombies are only a threat in movies.. in games not so much, specially in open world games where you have lots of space to run. They work better in lineal games in which you have little or not space to move.. like The Last of Us... or even Half Life 2...

Add stamina and a realistic movement speed and bingo problem solved.

I agree - we need more zombies, much more. In large cities, the zombies have to live in each house, moving in such cities alone should be suicidal.

To wade on military targets alone should not be real. This will make the game more cooperative.

Zombie does not need to be weaker or slower. Zombies should rule Chernarus, then it will be a real survival!

Id actually like to see a mixture of sprint zombies and slow zombies. Assuming dayz could magically just handle all of it... it would be be nice to see something like 2-3x the current zombies in game as sprint zombies and in addition to that 10x as many slow zombies,  visually Id hope we couldnt tell the difference, until they moved of course.

In my own mind, if all of those were sprint zombies.... youd just collect all of the zombies in a town, and lead them out of town... or into the ocean... and go back when you lost them and loot a much safer town. The slow zombies would be much harder to do this with... atleast more time consuming. In a walking, not looting through town, scenario only the sprint zombies would be remotely dangerous, youd navigate around the slow ones. The slow ones would only become dangerous in surprise situations... you were fighting 2 sprint zombies, but 10 slow zombies heard it are right around that corner and your about to get overwelmed... or worse yet you are looting a third story building and didnt notice that 20 zombies followed you into those narrow corridors.... or worse yet a rival player lead them to you. Being able to lead 20 zombies to somebody camping a location sounds like a really interesting tactic to me.

There should be more zombies and maybe no crabwalking/ hopping zombies. Those are silly as hell. The open environment of the map doesn't allow for slow zombies in the open fields; however, if there are tons of slow zombies in close quarters populated areas, they might pose a threat. In one of the videos above, with the slow zombies in Arma 3 breaking point or something, the zombies are simply coming from one direction, but if they were blocking all means of escape/ coming from everywhere, those guys would be toast.

It has been said before and I'll say it again, you would never die to zombies if they were slow in this type of game. People in this game will run kilometres just to try to lose one fast zombie. What do you think really would happen with slow zombies? More "sneaky" players? "Less KoS"? People already have forget that there actually are zombies in the game. If they were slow you wouldn't even have to pull out your fireman's axe and hit them in their toe to kill them.

If cities had high populations of slow zombies, and the player was always escaping by running away, they would eventually "starve out" from not stopping to get food, water, dry clothes, ammo, etc.

No, they would not. Run, gain same distance, loot few buildings as fast as you can, rinse and repeat.

If all players were doing that, most people would be way more desperate for supplies. Running away exhausts you, exposes you to the elements, makes you a an easy target for groups. Any quick loots that you would make, would be in vain.

Well now you have all of the above plus fast zeds.

OP based his post on current number of zeds, which is low both because of server performance and because they are too bugged.

This will change.

Agreed... Generally speaking, zombies are currently only a threat when you're a bambi with no gear, but the instant you find a half-decent melee weapon, you can just slaughter them as soon as they appear.

The problem with the slow zombie horde idea is that it would require an insanely high zombie density to even stay remotely challenging. As in "London Tube at rush hour" density - otherwise you could just easily run away all the time. And this would be unrealistic given the setting - Chernarus is a somewhat rural European country.
