I am forced to agree. But with that agreement I want ways to repair my gear. A file to bring edged weapons back from the grave, a canvas repair kit (We called them Tent sewing kits in the Corps) to fix packs, vests and web gear. Things don't stay new forever hence there should be less pristine clothing and Heavy Nylon canvas gear around. You should be happy to find a damaged assault vest knowing that you can get it up to worn with your Heavy Sewing Kit. And it would make some sense to allow the player to reinforce his clothing around the knees and elbows with Duct Tape. And require folks to wash their asses and clothing unless they don't mind ass-rash and lice.  We really need to get away from the adolescents that like to play dress-up in pristine military clothing. Your clothing should degrade from Pristine to Worn without the application of External force rather quickly.

Good ideas but the "rather quickly part" I don't agree with. Good clothing is tough and can wear quite well. I like the idea of a heavy sewing kit.

It definitely needs to be reworked from the ground up for realism.  Zombies would only cause minor damage to clothing that could easily be mended, falling should have NO effect of the status of your pants or shoes, and shooting somebody should have a small chance to damage, not ruin, goods hidden in the part of the body that was shot.  KOS encouragement be damned.  Odds are, if you get shot, it's YOUR fault, not the shooters; i.e, you did something wrong like running out in an open field or shooting a gun in a city.  It isn't that difficult to avoid being shot, just avoid being seen.

They should also add in a method for repairing ruined gear but it should be extremely hard to come by.

Examples of shitty damage system:

A) Fall from ledge, pants are now broken.

> You never ripped your pants on anything IRL? (how fast doesn't matter it's a game)

B ) Zombie attacks you and makes you bleed, but your rags are broken so you must find more.

> You can't dress a wound with ribbons.

C) Can of food with 100% remaining is broken.

> That's the only one i can get behind.

D) Zombie attack? Your hat is now broken and cannot be worn.

> How is that unlikely?

E) Zombie hits your chest once or twice, which successfully breaks your canopener, food, and ammunition you had in there.

> Not everything should be handled as a specific case (this is a game).

F) Hitting things with a crowbar (which is merely a blunt object) makes it get rusty until it is broken and cannot be used.

> the rusty decal is a general purpose damage indicator, hitting things with a crowbar WILL wear it out.

G) Jacket is wet, so now your compass is broken.

???

It needs to be improved as it is too simplistic BUT it is better than no system at all.  Stuff breaks down over time.  Heck, I lose more clothes to washing machine damage than anything else as they wear out with repeated scrubings let alone running through thickets and zombies, being shot at, etc.

Improve what we have, but for now I am ok with it.

@Lady Kyrah

How does falling off a small edege rip your pants to the point that you can't wear them? and idk how badly you've ripped your pants, but whenver i have it's just a small hole or slit. but in no way something that would render my pants unwearable. same with hats, that's just rediculous.

definitely needs plenty of balancing, especially melee weapons. it's pretty crazy how a axe made for cutting wood gets ruined chopping down 3 trees when i have a 15 year old axe that with a few sharpening sessions is as good as new(not really) and cuts down trees without a problem. yes it's alpha blah blah blah..

A) If my pants are ripped I can still wear them, I didn't break my pants

B ) A rag is already a shred of clothing. Now it's a broken shred of clothing? This is what I mean by each item needs specific conditions.

D) Your response doesn't make sense.

E) This thread is about turning the damage system into a specific case.

F) A crowbar is still a blunt object; if I can pick it up at hit things with it then it is still fully functional regardless of how long I've used it.

G) Yes, this is a thing that happens.

Perhaps you are right,  and I must stand corrected. I have some German Flectar gear that I use when hog hunting in heavy brush and so far they have survived for ten years with only minor repairs. My old pre digital USMC woodland camouflage jackets and trousers are even tougher but the camo pattern sucks compared to Flectar so they don't get used much. And This mountaineering pack I have had since 1996 and have restitched a few seams and repaired some abrasions but it is as good today as it was when new.

RandyR.jpg

I just bought a new Cold-Cold World Chernobyl like mine as a present for my son for about $200.00 (That should take care of his mountaineering needs into his middle years. And I also agree that a few hits from a Zombie shouldn't wreck a Gorka jacket and trousers and everything they contain. I also consider a bastard file, whetstone, and heavy duty sewing kit needed additions. Part of survival is maintaining your kit...so to the Devs I say, let us maintain it.

Unless I just fell down from a ledge into a bush or a barbed wire, no.

I want to know how my woodcutter axe gets ruined from chopping firewood, I'm pretty sure that's what it's designed to do.

You have to sharpen them. We cant do that. Yet. Though I do hear that rocks work on blades...

Yeah, I do realise that we need to sharpen tools, but I have an axe in my shed that is easily 30 years old. I've lost count of the amount of firewood I have cut with it and yet it has not reached ruined status. I would hardly even say it's worn.

Ya but you sharpen it at the least once a year. If you didnt it wouldnt be worth much.

The point is its a game. And there needs to be a mechanic that incentives getting new gear. Now they probably dont have it tuned quite right yetand probably wont for a long while. You know alpha and all. But its important from a game-play perspective to have things to do. Even if its just maintenance.

Some day using guns will degrade their quality, then all these weapon kits will be useful and desired for example.

Rocks works for sharpening axes as well. Just not ruined axes, which is indeed a bit silly.

Thanks for the beans!

Yeah, we should be able to maintain the gear. But...I think some of the civilian (non-hiking gear) should wear out quickly with use. Gear that is designed for the outdoors (civilian or military) should last much longer then it does. A good jacket/backpack/trousers/tactical vest should easily withstand many Zed attacks. And a heavy sewing kit is a great idea. Regular civilian clothes should degrade fast.

Well, that is the mains point (giving us things to do in the game). I'd rather it be more exciting things to do rather then run around looking for another jacket or pair of pants. Ok, it is in Alpha and they are adding more and more things to do every month. I'm definitely not complaining, I love this game. When we can build shelters (I hate to call it "base building") it will be really cool. When Zed hoards are created then events can be created to the point that people will be forced to cooperate or die.

Wouldn't it be cool when say, you're in Novad or Cherno and a massive hoard of Zombies attack the city? They Devs could send out a game-wide message for everyone in the area to start fortifying one of the main roads into the city (blocking the ingress route of the Zeds with cars and buses, etc.). In order to survive everyone has to work together for a limited period of time, if not then you die.

There are a lot of neat possibilities the Devs could use to make the game a lot more fun and a lot more dynamic (besides just helo crash sites and car wrecks).

I want to agree with you because I like the concept, but what will happen in real life is a bunch of KOS kids and general weenies will run around the people trying to work together killing them and taking their gear, then logging out right before the zombie wave hits.

I think that would be cool but it would make it too MMO'ish I think it would need to be an anonymous event to work.

Like perhaps it could be set up that at night zombies come out in force and get more active.

So fog could work the same way, when fog starts settling round a town zombies are going to be hunting inside it in hoardly fashion.

With limited visibility and many zombies to work around, people would need to work together.

Anyway I love how people actually voted saying it's fine as it is.

Really? Have you ever jumped off a 3ft wall and found your phone, legs, jeans, money, pants, penis and shoes were completely broken? It makes no sense. Of course it will not always be that way but by no means is it fine the way it is...

Items getting ruined should just have a random chance.

20 things in a backpack, one zombie hit = 1 possibly 2 items getting ruined, each item could have it's individual chance of getting ruined too. So some things like paper could have a 50/50 chance of getting ripped whereas a revolver, 10% perhaps although even that is madly unbelievably for a zombie to be destroying with a swing of its arm but for balancing.

Of course you could load your inventory with paper or other weak items to effectively protect your other gear but there's still a chance and if you're inventory is 90% paper...you're not going to be well equipped.

I am sure the developers said somewhere that big events like the zombie horde attacking a city would never happen. Too bad we cannot play that way, people need to be forced to work together.

It would be cool if you could set up an event by knocking someone out and carrying them past a hoarde in to a city and leave them with handcuffs on so they have to escape :D

Anyway like I said I think anonymous events could work, no zombie hoarde spawning counter or event notification just you'll be walking and suddenly something will happen.

Dynamic helicopter crashes would be AWESOME for one thing, lot of loot to have but everyone in a few mile radius is going to have seen/heard it too and check it out...

I don't think it's fine at all. A slight hit from a zombie can break your last 2 hours of hard work. Granted, yes, gear should get damaged. But ruining everything in a vest, or pants, or a backpack in one hit is just unnecessary

Learn how to protect your items.

Always store Axe in the first slot of backpack to save 50% of your backpacks contents right of the bat.

Store more, Large Durable Items in your gear, to protect other ones. Store things inside things, inside things, to protect gear.

There are many ways to keep gear in good condition if you are willing to try it out. Weather or not you agree with the tactics is another thread but for those who whine about losing gear one shot to zombies. A) get over it dont get attached to your gear

B) watch your back. and you wouldent have such issues (invisable zeds aside ofc)

C) spend 30 minutes to learn about how the game mehcnic works So you can best prepare yourself. Ive had a hunting bag full of gear pirstine, Shot by m4a1 2 times, ruined the back. and my Axe, and made  ONE item worn lol. The rest was fine.

Please note, I'm not flamming anyone just giving some helpful hints.

I think it does need tweaking. For example the rags scenario. Rags are by definition kinda ruined bits of cloth, it doesn't make much sense for them to become unusable unless they become dirty and unsanitary, but they should still be usable in that instance, just with a risk of infection.
