Walkie Talkies

Recommended Posts

So we all know that using things like Skype or TeamSpeak pretty much defeats the purpose of playing a game that strives to be as realistic as possible, but sadly it is inevitable.  Give people the chance to have and an advantage, via telepathic link with each other that spans ANY distance, and they will abuse it maliciously.

That being said, I think there are a few changes that could be implemented to encourage the use of the in game radio.  The MAJOR change would be to add a slot, similar to military boots having the ability to hold a combat knife or boonies and fishing hooks) that specifically holds the radio on things like vests, or even just adding a clasp on the back of the model and making it an item that one would simply equip like clothing, so that it doesn't cost the player an entire two slots just to use.  Let's face it, if you're going to use a walkie talkie, you won't be fishing it out of your backpack every time you need to use it.  More than likely you will have it clipped on to a belt or attached by some other means.

Other small changes such as making them slightly more common, along with batteries, decreasing their inventory size to one slot, and increasing their range would do nicely.  Obviously this wouldn't completely stop the use of Skype or TeamSpeak but maybe changes like this would at least give players SOME reason to use the in game radio.  I for one would definitely use them more often with my friends if it were more convenient.

What about mirroring outside coms in game ?

Anytime you talk on your mic the voice is pushed in game thus promoting in game talk indirectly.

Exactly why that needs to be reworked.  Being able to hear a whisper from 40m away is tad ridiculous.  If the game took the volume of the incoming voice into account and projected the voice that other players hear in game at the same, or near the same volume, suddenly we can now whisper to those right next to us without much fear of being heard, and extend the range at which we can be heard by shouting.

I REALLY hope something like this can be done...  The first time I played the standalone was the first time I had experienced the Arma engine and small mechanics such as direct chat and free look blew my mind.  If they could only tweak these things just a bit.

Good ideas, I for one would use the walkie talkies if they were actually a bit more practical, mainly if their range was farther. The game tries to be realistic, I want to play it like that.

This is great idea too, but it has some flaws. people that don't use a headset or external mic can almost never be heard when whispering, I use my integrated mic sometimes and people only hear if I talk a bit slower and loudly, sort of like talking to an old person. Another flaw, the shouting thing. Its a good thought, but would you really want to be in your room at 2 AM yelling as loud as you can to some guy in-game,  and waking up everyone else in your house at the same time? its a good idea, but it has flaws and I don't see it being added.
