Question about servers and who they are hosted by

Recommended Posts

ok, first post , so don't shoot OK?

I have been playing a while now, and I just kind of wanted to make sure I understand how the hive servers work.

From what I can tell when I play on one hosted by gameserver, it looks like if I connect to any server not hosted by gameserver I start fresh (no gear) on that server.

if that is the case, and I play on a another server hosted by vilayer or what ever, and I go back to a gameserver hosted server, do I go back to the char I had on that?

I'm trying to understand how the characters roll over, and if there is any benefit to playing on servers hosted by a specific company vs another.

Any information or suggestions are great. I did search for this but could not seem to find this.

In general, there's 2 public hives for the Stable branch - Regular or Hardcore (forget the new names for these?). You log into a Regular server on Stable and then into anther one and your character should be right where you left it with the gear you had. If you then log into a Hardcore server on Stable you're on a different hive, meaning you have a different character (different location, different gear). So your Regular follows your Regular and your Hardcore follows your Hardcore. I'm not sure if there are private hives yet? But there will be, and those will be different/separate.

As Death by Crowbar said there are 2 hives right now. First person and third person. Private hives are coming SoonTM. Some servers are broken and are not connected to main hive, avoid those servers ;)

Its likely much more complicated but here's a basic rundown. The hives are databases of data, I'm assuming hosted by Bohemia, that keep track of you characters, their items, etc. Eventually they want to have them control certain aspects of loot distribution and allow private shards of it to be rented but that's a ways away. You have one for Regular (third person enabled) and one for Hardcore (first person only). The servers that you play on themselves can read this data. For all intents and purposes you should be able to carry your characters across server providers, as long as they are able to read that central data. Sometimes you can join a server and you will see a message saying that the server can't connect to the central hive. Get out of those fast.

interesting, I knew about the first and third person (hardcore/regular)  It just really seemed like when I play on a specifically hosted server, every time I try a server not hosted by the same company I get a character wipe on that server. Perhaps its just me, but I have had that happen many different times. so much so that I only join ones hosted by a specific company to avoid starting over.

If you are trying to connect today, a lot of servers are down due to maintenance. So things are a little crazy right now. Normally I'm been pretty lucky and have not had a character wipe in over a month or so. I'm not logging in today unless after 10 PM eastern time tonight.

no, this is not about today, I have been playing for a couple hundred hours over the past couple months. not a complete newbie, but not a pro by any means.

its not really a char wipe btw, its just on the said server. when I exit and rejoin the hosted by same company servers, everything is back.

That's cool. I too am curious about how exactly servers work. Like, how come some servers say they have a few people in them, but you cannot connect to them? Are they intentionally blocking us which is against the rules, or is it a glitch? It kind of sucks that admins can kick people when they join which also happens, but are not enforced to follow the guidelines. I think servers should also be allowed to shut down a server if they see someone hacking or something, not kick people. Because otherwise, they can just farm loot on their own servers by kicking people.

I think there is a loophole that was found so that someone running a server can prevent people from joining without having to kick them.

So I too, have many questions.

Yeah, I have noticed those also. This is all just from observation though. I thought that characters were supposed to be spread across all hive servers (within first or third person of course) it just didnt seem like that was happening. Maybe it is and I just have been unlucky and joined a server with an issue for some reason when I noticed it. I havent bambie spawned and have it be perm for a long time. usually a simple re-log until I have my gear back.

I almost wish that servers were randomized with persistence across all. so that people could re-log, but not how populated that server is until they are in it. would make it interesting if they were just load balanced.

Yeah that's a good idea.

I can't wait until Dayz is in Beta or after because I'm sure a lot of these issues will be addressed and probably for the better.

As far as fragnet goes there is no possible way for me to deny people from joining.

Sucks when my group isn't and our server is full it's like uhhhhhh shit... Guess we'll play somewhere else.

Even though considering the money we pay to rent our own server definitely leaves me wanting to login and kicka bunch of people so my friends can join.

But no there is no way to lock a server (at least using our provider) and have never ever had a regular stable server onot allow me to join.

what would be cool is to be able to reserve slots in that case , so you dont have to kick someone whos playing and doing well, but you could say "reserve" 10 logins for you crew.
