Zombie Killing 101

Recommended Posts

As there is a lot of crying about zombies lately and some people seem to be outright helpless I will outline some of the basics of how to deal with our undead friends.

First the basic equipment rules:

  1. Get healthy. (You can take more hits and both blood and health will be regenerating - which also means you will bleed out slower)
  2. Get clothes in good condition. (Better condition means higher protection and they won't be ruined nearly as fast)
  3. The Sewing Kit is your best friend. (Use it liberally - you don't want any clothing below worn condition, repair asap)
  4. Get a melee weapon - preferable a Fire Axe. (The faster you kill zombies the lower the chances of critical hits)
  5. Get a vest or Chest Holster. (It offers more protection and can also store items)
  6. Get bandages or rags. (There is always a chance that you will start bleeding)

Now about tactics and movement:

  1. Draw your axe as soon as possible. (Otherwise you might get hit while putting it out)
  2. Never ever stand still when a zombie is attacking. (Even if he doesn't face you he will still hit you)
  3. Do not move in a straight line, zigzag instead. (They will hit you when running in a straight line)
  4. Fight zombies on open ground. (Plenty of space to move is plenty of space to dodge)
  5. Engage zombies by letting them charge you and sidestepping/circling. (Moving directly at the zombie will get you hit)
  6. In melee circle around the zombie - but not too close. (This way you avoid getting hit)
  7. To attack stop for a very short moment to aim for the zombie. (Greatly improves your chance to hit - but think of point 2!)
  8. After attacking keep circling - even if you killed the zombie. (Zombies might still hit you after going down)
  9. Avoid movement in narrow spaces like buildings and around obstacles like closed gates or fences. (Your hitbox might get stuck and zombies will hit it while your are elsewhere)
  10. If zombies damage you but are nowhere near you go back the way you came from and kill the zombie. (You left your hitbox behind and its about to get eaten - save it!)

And general tips:

  1. Avoid time consuming actions in/near towns and military bases as you might attract zombies.
  2. When looting cities or towns close the doors behind you - but only if not already engaged in combat.
  3. Sudden cut off sounds are most likely bugs - quieter but not cut off sounds are most likely real zombies.
  4. Kill all zombies around you and make sure of it before starting to bandage yourself.
  5. If you suddenly take damage and everything below your waist is ruined its most likely not a zombie but the leg breaking bug (which might not always break your legs).
  6. Do not shoot zombies for other reasons than target practice.

If you got criticism, questions, corrections or your own tips feel free to post!

:) Happy slaughtering! :)

I had no idea this could happen; certainly explains a lot, though.

Does the zombie hill of death glitch still work??

It did the last time I tried it, but it took a bit of running around and kiting to get the zombie high enough up on the hill for it to work.

Also, something to add to this, keep in mind that zombies CAN use stairs now; I was playing the other day and entered a house and went upstairs; I turned around and saw someone coming up the stairs at me. I thought it was another player at first, but then saw that it was actually a zombie. So just remember that stairs can no longer save you.

But ladders still can, right??

AFAIK, yes, but don't quote me.

I  jog circle forward (pressing w and either a or d at the same time) and hit zombies, might not look at skilled or graceful as a well time side step but oh well. I would add one thing. Jog a wider circle with multiple zombies, they will hit each other and thin the herd

ZigZagging wont lose zombies any more. Just put your items away and sprint straight as fast as possible to get away from zeds. Also use the terrain. They can get tangled up on rocks and such or you can run through a house and close the last door behind you to trap a zombie inside.

1. Draw your axe as soon as possible. (Otherwise you might get hit while putting it out)

Also hold W while doing so, because then your character will automatically keep moving while equipping the weapon.
If you don't, there's a risk that your character stops to equip the weapon and the zombie(s) gets a free strike.

you forgot CARDIO

No stamina, no cardio, not a relevant joke.

Yes, zombies aren't able to climb ladders at all (and they shouldn't).  They can climb stairs; however, they get confused if you climb more than one flight, so you might leave them behind in this way, unless they follow on your heels.

Shooting zombies will attract others: don't do this and use a melee weapon instead, unless they're killing you.  I was exploring the fire station in Chernogorsk today when I got attacked by two zombies which broke my legs.  As I couldn't melee anymore and was bleeding badly I resorted to shoot them.  Then I quickly applied a splint and climbed three flights of stairs.  I could hear other zombies below me but they didn't come upstairs.

Which brings to tip# 7: always carry a splint with you.  I do, and today it saved my ass.
