How to survive?

Recommended Posts

The most ridiculous thing asked in DayZ is; "Are you friendly?" If they are they will say; "yes." If they are not they will say; "yes" and then kill you to steal your stuff and laugh like an infant.

The key to my survival (usually 10+ hours per life easy) is working down your priority list and having a goal. You can have a ghillie suit and a M21 but without antibiotics you are likely to die. You can have a helicopter, but without a hunting knife you are likely to die cause you can't kill wild food (primary food source IMO). So work down your priorities and then develop your character.

Personally, I don't even leave Cherno/Elektro without: antibiotics, morphine, bandages and wipes, backpack, 2x waterbottle, matches, hunting knife, axe and duct tape. Preferably I'd have 2 tr-kits and a empty bloodbag too in case I manage to still not find replacement food/water.

As for goal-setting, it helps you to stay focused and weigh risks. I.e. going to a military place is like going to a candy store and sounds like a good idea anytime..but, do you really need extra candy and is it worth getting killed for this time? If I want a range finder or dmr..yes, as there is no other place (except heli crash) to find it. But if I have a DMR/M4 SD/M14/Ghillie suit etc, than what are my goals there?

Prioritise, think before you act and think ahead should keep u surviving. Have fun!

Matches, hatchet, hunting knife, bandages, antibiotics  and the locations of wells are things you really need, water bottles/canteens are pretty much optional as long as you know where all the wells are.

First priority is a rifle, then a backpack, then the things listed above. I usually start in Cherno and raid the firestations and medical camp to get the basics, then head inland towards Stary Sobor to fully equip.

Don't get annoyed if you die quickly as a freshspawn - it's the best time to be killed as you have nothing to lose, and it lets you map out the hostile situation in your spawn area so subsequent spawns tend to work better.

Always be on your guard if you see zombies that are beyond your own z spawn distance (anything over 250m), or if you spawn into zombies.

Only run when you have to, get used to crouching and hiding in bushes or pine trees - especially pine trees, as they stop zombies attacking you. with the zombie losing interest and wandering off after a short while.

If you have melee weapons, don't deal with zombies in the open - lure them into a tree or building and hack them to bits inside, zombies don't run indoors they only walk.

When scouting/looting and come across a camping tent, take it and carry it with you. it takes 3 slots and worth every slot. should you become infected, or your blood reduced, find a nice wooded area and pitch the tent, then choose "rest". this will fight infection and regenerate your health quicker. The important thing to be aware of, is you are vunerable, try to find an area that cannot be seen at distance.

essential tools: Hatchet, Hunting knife, Matches, water bottle, empty tin can, 1 string and 1 ducktape and a map.

The string you craft splints -- no need for constantly finding morphine and entering potentially hostile areas.

The duck tape to repair your hatchet and waterbottles.

stick to small towns and villages, until you find enough basic equipment.

In Short: Spawn, essential items,, get the hell outa town. until you have established your survival skills.

Hope this helps.

Advance steps:

Spawn in Kamenka and go north to Zelnogorsk.  There's a hospital, firehouse and and a grocery store.  There's also bike spawns too.  Avoid the nonsense of Cherno and Electro.  Then go north to Pustoshka (barns and another grocery store).  By then you have enough gear to risk the NWAF.

Another option is to spawn in Electro and head straight to Pusta then Mogliveka, then Novy and Stary (good chance of heli crashes in the fields).  This is more dangerous but if you are itching for action and quick gear this is a good route.  At least if you get KOS the guy(s) doing it will have something to lose (they are usually well geared) and proficient at PvP.  Typically in Electro and Cherno it's basically bandit wannabe survivors and hill campers shooting at unarmed survivors.
