[MAP SUGGESTION] Balota->Civilian Airport (+ Lumber Factory Idea)

Recommended Posts

I love unique areas on the map, the ship, the tower blocks, the destroyed town, even that tiny scrapyard who's location I can never work out but that I always seem to stumble upon. It would be great to have some more so here's my suggestion for two new unique places:

1. Civilian Airport:

IMO Balota is a big mistake. Putting all that military loot right on the coast was asking for trouble and was probably one of the main reasons the south coast spawns were scrapped, which again IMO was a shame. I also think that it just doesn't make sense, a large military airfield just minutes away from the local capital and within eyeshot of large residential towerblocks? It seems unlikely to me. And on top of that there are too many military areas on the map generally. So I suggest that Balota Military base becomes Balota Airport! Now a civilian airport right next to the local capital makes perfect sense and it would be an interesting location. It would not have to be anything fancy, a single building for checkin/checkout, a carpark, some civilian aircraft hangers, maybe a few storage buildings and obviously an airstrip. It would be a great place to find backpacks, police/security-guard gear and the carparks and hangers would be great place to find parts when vehicles are implemented. Here are some pictures of the kind of buildings I mean:

Civilian Hangers:

2. Lumber Factory

EDIT: The 'lumbermill' in berezino doesn't really do justice to the whole abandoned factory in the woods thing im going for here so i'd still class this as a unique area.

Its reasonable to assume from all the forests and small towns that this region would have a lumber industry. I think a large lumber factory would be a great location on the map. There is something magical about huge abandoned factories in a horror setting, and lumbermills in particular just seem to hit the right spot. In the game it would have great utility and would be the place to go for high quality base building tools and materials. As for the location, I suggest in the forest far up north that lies centrally on the horizontal axis, the one above Devils Castle and Gvodsno. As for the layout and design. I think the lumbermill from Twin Peaks would serve as a great model.

Theres a lumber factory in berenzino, and yes, balota should be civillian, not military, it ruins the fun on the journey to nwaf and its reward when its a lot quicker to get to balota and get about the same amount of gear.

I agree that Balota should be repurposed.  And you might be right about the lumber mill idea, we have one in Berezino, but we could use one or two more dotted across the map.

Its actually quicker to get to NWAF, considering the new spawns.

Balota used to be a civil airport (with a military camp set up nearby), I wish they'd put it back to that.  There's already a couple of lumber mills, most noticeably in Berezino, with a smaller one near Zelenogorsk (and I'm sure there's a few others spread about, I think there's still one north of Lopatino, I've also seen logging camps all around).

I never played the mod, that's really interesting. I think the decision to make it military was a very poor one. IMO I wouldn't even want the military camp (although it would make sense that the military set up a camp by the airport at the start of the crisis), I think all that military gear right by the coast would still stop them bringing back the south coast spawns (which I really miss).

Yeah their should be at least one other lumber mill, because if they choose to add base building in then everyone is going to be swarming the only one in Berezino for supplies. I agree with what everyone is saying about Balota as well, it's one of the reasons people stay on the coast, is because they can get their military gear so much easier from Balota.

Since all the spawns are now NE of the map, making balota civilian, would remove almost all military loot from the south. Therefore many people wouldn't walk 10km to get there.

True, but they would probably put the spawns back to generally spawning around the coast rather than just the NE part of the coast.  I do miss spawning in Kamenka, I haven't even seen it since I started playing standalone.

Doesn't look like that's the way it's going.

I too miss those spawns a lot. There was the swamp and green mountain and those two little villages. I know this sounds ridiculous and that clearly there could be no actual difference in temp from it being more southerly but it just seems warmer and brighter down there than in Berezino and Svet (although thats probably just because there was no rain back when we spawned down there)

The devs have said they are putting in more unique places so I hope this gets a read.

(utterly shameless bump)

Meh, you're allowed to do like 1 bump per day anyway, so you're about overdue.

To make this not just a shameless bump:

It would make more sense for Balota to be the civil airfield, it's located very close to civilian centers (Cherno and even Balota itself), it's got nearby 'commuter' service, and it's not really 'big enough' to have been a military post.  The runway itself looks more overgrown/poorly taken care of than either NW or NE, more suited to an airfield that services crop dusters or other light aircraft as opposed to part of a 'Jump School' (which I think is what both NW and NE are suppose to have started as lore wise).  Even if all they did was remove the barracks and what not and put in civilian versions of everything (hangers that don't spawn military loot, a non camo ATC, etc)  They wouldn't even really need a 'terminal', in fact they could really just retexture the existing models and do minor tweaks inside (Paint job mostly, make it look like a military based turned over to civilians redo the brig to look more like an office and turn the cell into a storage room) and remove the military stuff from the loot tables and put in more civilian loot.
