I want to be scared - A discussion on horror and Dayz

Recommended Posts

B ) We can have balanced PVE and PVP. As I said, which you clearly ignored, I'm not opposed to having to weigh up whether pulling the trigger is worth it. However no matter how hard you try you will never stop the KoS mentality. If I think you're a threat, I'm putting a bullet in you before you see me, end of story. If that means I have to risk a potential horde, then I'll weigh that decision. But, 9/10 times, you're more of a threat than a horde ever will be. You're a threat to my life, my food prospects, the prospects of any team mates I have with me, the prospects of finding something which might help me survive longer. So If you put me in a situation where it's you or me, I'll choose me every time.

C) Assuming that I want this to be DayZ: Battlefield is pretty naive. You know how many people I've killed in the 200 or so hours since I started? I can count them on my fingers.

By your last statements it sure sounded like you wanted to game never to advance beyond the aspect of simple pvp from the mod version.

The day the fear of zombies outweighs the fear of other humans is the day this game becomes as boring as all the other PVE survival games out there. I have no interest in pitting my wits against a computer, thanks.

Lol this only means your going to have to work for your kills allot harder. The boring part is the straight up PVP aspect. There is absolutely very little interaction with other players outside of the standard gun them down mode that currently ppl are displaying in larger amounts.

PVE also means your going to have to deal with elements, hunt and various other activities to keep alive. But the big thing about this game is getting the zombies right on to where they "needed to be" where the mod failed to keep in check.

The only reason there's a 'gun them down' mode at the moment is because there's nothing to do once you hit fully geared. I understand what you mean about having more PVE stuff in the game - not opposed to that at all, in fact the majority of my time spent in this game has been on core survival -  but we're talking about fear in this topic. Zombies will never be scary. Especially computer controlled zombies. The environment will never be scary. The best you can hope for is jump scares, which are nothing.

The only scary thing in this game is other people. That's the way it should be. The fear of a 'worlde gonne madde' where every interaction with another human is a terrifying few moments of uncertainty followed by either comradeship or death. And it's for that reason that KoS should never be punished by some sort of artificial system. That will ruin the only scary thing about this game.

And this is an issue the developers are trying to combat daily.

Sure they can and of coarse the developers can make the environment scary. You just have to let them do there thing and help give feed back to make things better. And if the game isn't what you want than one of the many mods to follow it will probably better suite your need. After the full release.

After all its modding in the first place that nearly fractured and divided the core games original intent of what it was supposed to be even more so.

A good thread started more than a year ago, full of excellent suggestions...and none of it, a year later, have been implemented.

What a pity, really. An immersive environment should be one of the top priorities - immersive contents like clothes, additional weapons and so on are important, too but seriously...DayZ is marketed as a post-apocalyptic survival game: putting in some post-apocalypse should be on the top tier of the "TO DO" list.

It doesn't matter if the immersive environment is a map textures overhaul (more blood, more destuction and so on), new sounds (excellent post Star Thornberry!), more static items (roadblocks, gridlocks, and so on) or God knows why...DayZ dev team should work much harder on this part. It's really difficult sensing some improvement in this area, and it really shouldn't be after 2+ years of "we're working on the immersion, stuff is coming soon".

I'm sorry, but I disagree. What's your definition of scary? The only scary zombie games are scripted, Resi Evil type games. And that's just jump scares, not genuine frightened-to-the-bone-marrow terror. Good for a couple of hours, then get boring as hell.

The only time I've felt that kind of fear is when I know I'm being stalked by another player who wants to take the many hours I've spent lovingly crafting a character and destroy them. Those have been my most enjoyable moments in DayZ so far.

Well luckily they are not straight up zombies but infected ppl so its not out of the question to have some with better motor skills for hunting and so on. Ones that have sharper animal instincts that can plan various attack pattern that you wouldn't be able to predict so easy or detect in groups. That would still possibly be able to steal away your character with precious gear. That possibly can learn how to climb ladders and what not to get to you.

Were still a long ways from that point but there was mention of infected that would be able to stalk prey like hunters.

Still not going to be good enough. DayZ AI is not going to match players, I'm willing to bet on that. You think a zombie is going to sit in a bush for 15 minutes waiting for me to make a move? Or set a landmine in a doorway in an attempt to trap me? Or fool me into working together only to betray me at the most opportune moment?

Those things can't be replicated by AI, at least not any time in the near future.
