Visible weapon serial numbers

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would like to have a serial number on every weapon.

The number should be unique and visible somehow.

e.g. the Mosin has a visible serial number but it is not unique.

I hope this would be possible but I am not sure how difficult something like this would be to implement.

I searched via search engine and used the search from the forum.

Could not find this suggestion anywhere.

If I did not put enough effort into the search and this is an old story I am sorry and I will try to do better next time.

I am not 100% sure about this, but I am fairly certain it would require a unique 3D-model for every single Mosin, then. Which would be a little too much.

Yeah, that would be too much.

But maybe there could be other ways to show it like through inventory menu or inspect weapon action.

Not really. You could, in theory, randomize a timer for every Mosin spawn, and then put the variable for the serial number in the description. eg, "...Serial number 1337."

Yeah, but that would just be in the description, rather than being displayed on the model itself.

Also please note, that I don't know anything about 3D-Model, so I am just guessing.

Well, there wouldn't need to be a bunch of 3D models. What Dean could do is maybe make a slightly different texture for each condition of Mosin, complete with serial number. These would then be randomized on the loot table and "stretched" over the Mosin model. However... This would take a lot of time, and work, and the functionality of such a feature is questionable beyond "realism."

Hello there

This *is* doable, but the actual usefulness might be negated by the work involved.

One of the tank mods (could have been IFL) had dynamic Turret numbers. There's no reason why it could not be applied to rifles.

I don't think it would need that much, but it definately would need a separate texture and config entry for each one which would amount to pretty much the same thing.

If it is indeed creating dynamic textures, this would be the way to do it. Would still require some sort of tracking back-end, but we already have that with the hive. I might have to stop playing long enough to have a look into this...

That would be a very cool little detail. But,as of this moment,

i wouldn't want to see the team dedicating their time

on implementing something like that.Keep in mind

that the serial should be unique in every weapon

so it's not something you can copy/paste.

I think it is more complicated from what

it seems.Maybe in the future,totally.

This.

Why would you even want to have unique serial numbers on every weapon. What purpose does it serve in a game/simulator?

You just threw a suggestion post at us without going into much detail about the reasoning behind your idea.

Hi,

not trying to ride a dead horse but i somehow missed your question.

I did not write about the purpose cause i thought it is pretty obvious.

It would give things (here guns) a history and builds/deepens the relationship to the player to certain individual items (here guns).

There are so many possible ways where i can see this having an effect.

I will list just a few thoughts cause i think this is dead already:

- famous guns (maybe even possible to track stats over the guns then)

- recognition of an old gun of yours when finding it on other players or get it by a friend

- awkward serial numbers may be valued just for fun (1337666)

- foundation for attributes for guns not viewable (e.g. blaser95 with serial numbers 0 - 100 are more durable/accurate or can mount a certain attachment while later models can't)

- bonding with your gun

for a reason the devs like to introduce unique items in a global hive system (like 2 NVG or whatever rocket has in mind).

the guns are already very important items for many survivors and a serial would give them a bit of a personality.

i had some guns which were more to me then just the mean for the next kill. i had a winchester which was a trusted buddy in quite some shootouts which i really could not let go for better arms till i died and i still remember where i found it).

there is a dayz feeling/way to think about things in game which i believe this would fit in perfectly.

i understand that this is more of value for actual survivors cause only over time a story can develop.

i could care less about the codkiddies but even for this kind of "gamer" i could see benefits.

i hope this shows that there are a many reasons why this would be cool (the implementing issues aside for a second).
