Powering up vending machines to buy food

Recommended Posts

Yeah the title sums it up pretty well
Find a petrol generator [is this announced yet? If not I'd like to suggest that too] and plug it into a vending machine
Feed the genny petrol and the vending machine money, and get a source of nigh on endless low quality snacks and drinks [100 available per machine]?

Also breaking into the vending machine should be possible but cause the drinks and food inside to be highly damaged or destroyed in the process, leaving only 10% of the possible haul.

This could lead to bases being built with vending machines in mind. Also, an addition of one or two to Green Mountain could aid in sieges there.

A bit complicated for a bit of poor quality food, isn't it?

How about a fridge to keep the already numerous foodstuffs you will be able to hunt & loot fresh. You can have a vending machine right beside it for all I care, but I'll go for the more nutritious stuff.

Oh and don't forget that you will need coins if the machine will work, easier open with a crowbar  :D

And I highly doubt that would damage anything inside.

Its quite easy to break a vending machine open with a crowbar, without damaging anything inside tbh :)

Way too complicated

Think about this scenario. Its 5 months after the apocalypse. its been a week since you had food(durn hi-cap servers), and you spot a vending machine far in the distance. You run toward, desperate for some delicious sugary treats. You reach it, dig into your pocket when-"GASP" you have no coins.

The next few hours are spent crying and uselessly pushing the buttons, trying for your life to get a Hershey Bar.

A few hours pass. You are on the verge of death, clutching your ax and wondering if it will hurt. Suddenly, a man appears in the distance. He comes closer, with a hungered look on his face; you reach up, pleading for some food, anything. He pops 4 quarters into the machine, and walks away with a snickers."Damn shame" he says as he walks away. You perish, 5 hours later of hunger and sadness, clutching onto your ax and an empty Snicker's wrapper.

If only the ax could smash into the machine....

(P.S this was my 100th post! It's been a fun time on these forums guys!)

I suggested that yet, electricity is working in some places so some machines should work. i suggested to put coins in Dayz so people can use it... but yes sounds weird that in a zombie apocalypse a guy is searching for coins to buy a soda from a vending machine

Yeah. So you:

-find a generator and fuel

-haul them over whatever distance to where the vending machine is

-spend hours of tinkering with the engine and fruitless yanking on the ignition chord

-go and find some tools to work on the engine with

-finally get the generator running

-discover that it's an industrial generator and too powerful to run the vending machine

-endlessly search the building and nearby buildings for an adaptor

-plug in the vending machine and switch on... wait for the software to initialise

-realise you have no coins

-go on ANOTHER search to find enough money to actually get something out of the machine

(by this time you're in a sort of trance - robotically working towards your goal of getting a tiny, un-nutritious bit of junk food)

-pour the coins into the slot, and hammer at the buttons randomly to make the machine give you something - anything ...

...

...you smile with an insane satisfaction as you watch the mechanism move slowly through its delivery process... the chocolate bar wobbles forward and...

STUCK! It fails to drop.

Vending machines always fucking do that.

I think breaking into vending machines is a good idea, and should provide tons of drink or food(depending on the type of machine it is).  I don't think you should be able to power it up and I think only a couple cans should be ruined from breaking in, but I think the respawn for vending machines should be a lot longer than normal loot(when they finally add that in).

There were heaps of negative responses to the idea of paying but I'll reiterate/expand my OP.
The basic point of using a generator was so as not to damage the food and save the effort of hammering on metal with an axe.

Vending machines are built like safes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vending_machine#Safety_and_security_issues: Heavy and practically armoured, obviously not to the level of actual safes but then again they are large crates full of food and money so they won't be a pushover. An axe is not going to be an easy job to break it- vending machines in DayZ don't have nice glass fronts designed to handle First World pilferers, they have metal/plastic facades designed to stop Second World thieves [the kind who, in countries like Moldavia, steal the manhole covers off the street and melt them down.]

Hitting the vending machine to open it is an option, but bashing up the machine, in the process, fucks with the stuff inside [say you puncture the cans of drink with your axe while hitting it, because you're going to be hitting hard to penetrate the metal and plastic façade] and so you only gain 90% of the possible food or drink you could have. Getting a generator means you and anybody else with money have a way of getting food and drink out. Same with crowbars: The rough treatment would ruin most of the snacks inside. Also it doesn't look like there's many easy gaps for crowbars to exploit.
In fact, with all the punishment you're enacting it's possible the vending machine will topple [they're top heavy].

If your issue was HOW WILL YOU GET MONEY? then remember that when cash is implemented, if zombie loot drop is implemented by then, a lot of ex-citizen zombies will be walking around with wallets on them. Literally all you will have to do is kill a nearby zombie and loot their corpse.

Also: Vending machines should probably have a little cash inside too. The Chernarus Chubb Co. employees were gonna come empty it at the end of the month, but then the zombie outbreak happened.

Still no.

It's to much effort for junk.

Somebody who has the capacity to fill a jerry can with fuel and power up a convenient petrol generator probably already has food. Why waste resources and time getting Pipsi when you already have a canteen full of water?
