Infection system overhaul

Recommended Posts

Currently, infections in DayZ seem way too deadly, especially considering how rare antibiotics are and how common infections are triggered from zombie attacks.

What if we had two distinct types of infections?

The first type of infection would be a "Regular" infection triggered by normal zombies, cold temperatures, non cooked food/non boiled water, rarely triggered by regular wounds, being close to infected players, infected blood bags, etc. (Basicly how infections are triggered normally in dayZ)

This infection works almost exactly like the current infections, coughing, blood dropping from 2/3 to 1/4  (Instead of killing the player) spreading to other players in close contact, etc.

However, if the player stays warm, well fed, and hydrated, as well as "Resting" (By not running around much) the infection will go away on its own after a few hours. As the infection clears up, the blood level will very slowly return to whatever it was before the player was infected. (Blood lost from damage however will not be restored)

It can also be cured by antibiotics, which will cure it instantly. (Blood level will return to normal slightly faster then by waiting for the immune system to fight it off)

The second type of infection would be the "Zombie Plague". This is only triggerd by the viral "Super Zombie" varients. Unlike the "Normal" infection, it causes the players blood to drop steadily untill he dies (Basicly the current infection behavior in 1.7.7) The only way to cure it is by antibiotics, resting will have no effect on it.

This allows antibiotics to still be useful while making "Normal" infections less of a death sentance.

The dev's wanted to put an emphasis on survival, I know.

But It makes very little sense for infections to be so common in the newest patch, yet at the same time loot is so rare you can go to all three hospitals, and not find any antibiotics! (it hurts the balance a bit too) Surely there would be a small chance to recover from the flu or whatever from being out in the rain too long without medicine. Infections would still be just as crippling. (Especially the varient contracted from the viral zombies, which will kill the player unless cured.) It would just make the infections from normal zombies and the enviroment a tiny bit less deadly, as long as the player can keep himself nourished/rested.

I stopped reading after "too deadly," and scrolled down to read the comments so far and to write this line.

There will be even more infections and thus you are even more likely to catch one in the Standalone.

That said, reading the rest now.

Edit; Yeah, no.

- Caught through zombie attacks = Fine

- Inability to stay warm = Fine (Though how come cold temperatures causes you to catch a zombie-flu?)

- Ingesting raw stuff or dirty water = Fine

- Infected wounds(e.g. gunshots) = Fine

- Becoming cured on its own = Nope. Not fine.

Why? Because there wouldn't BE a zombie apocalypse if everybody could cure it simply by sitting in the corner of a warm room.

DayZ isn't gamey enough to make diseases that easy to deal with. Even less so with the addition of 12 real life diseases with their actual symptoms and medication to go alongside with them.

Isnt that the point of a zombie game like DayZ? Contrary to popular belief, DayZ wasn't designed to be a PvP only game, zombies simply were not deadly enough, now this buff to zeds has added more balance between PvP and PvE.

Here comes all the people defending how logical and solid the current infection system is >.>

When you get sick...you can get better

in dayz when you get sick you are dead

antibiotics are rare-r than diamonds

And I dont care if you happen to find them everywhere I do not, nor does anyone else.

Having infections this bad makes people PVP more because they need what they can find.

You need to survive. What would the point of an infection be if ABs were common?

If this were actually a situation, ABs wouldn't be everywhere. You would need to scavenge, trade, and possibly kill in order to save your own life.

Welcome to DayZ.

Nobody said it was perfect.

But I don't agree that the human body should be able to fight the virus -- even in its early/weaker stages -- without any external help.

I mean hell, it's a virus that pretty much destroys your brain and brings you down to the most primal level and/or kills the infected person is over time.

Personally I love the current mechanics.  I'm pretty new, so I don't know how it "used to be".

In most of the zombie genre, just getting scratched by a zombie is a death sentence.  At least here there is a chance for a cure.

It also makes total sense for medical supplies to be hard to find.

I just find a tent rather than antibiotics and rest. There's more than one way to get over an infection.

I thought rest was like a 1%  chance? That's a lot of resting to cure yourself. Antibiotics need to be more common. The whole basis of my game as a loner is to search for antibiotics. Dozens of hospital runs, crashed helicopters, and hitting medical tents over the last week have netted me zero antibiotics. That's a problem.

I read the replies and I everyone makes very valid arguments.

Its also impossible to say if being cured over time, etc would make sense not because it is never explained exactly what the infection is.

I always assumed the enviromental, contact with other players, gunshots, rotten food, etc. were normal "Everyday" infections like colds, flu, food poisoning, bacterial infections, etc.

Maybe infections from zombie strikes should have no chance of healing overtime.

,

It's just annoying as all hell to die because I caught what I assume is a cold or something from being out in the rain too long.  Is the plague supposed to be airborne and being cold weakens your immune system, thus infecting you?

Why the hell are antibiotics rarer then NVGs?  I know its a zombie takeover so they should be rare, but going to all three hospitals several times, and finding none whatsoever is just absurd. I just wish either antibiotics were more common, or there were a few new ways to fight off the illness added to the game. (Resting, abillity to try and create medicine using plants found around chernarus, etc.)

I believe that Antibiotics should be more common. Once I get infected, I should just stop fucking playing. The only damn cure for me, is killing myself and going back to my damn dead body. Yes, I understand zombies need to be more of a threat, if you want to make them more of a threat, add loads of zombies, rather than making antibiotics more rarer than a fucking Helicopter. This horrible patch literally made me switch back to 1.7.7.1, and have a server with my friends. Because I can't take this horrible zombie system. I don't play DayZ to get angry, I play it to have fun. That is what a game is created for - to entertain the player. And don't even mention the horrible probabilities of infection. I swear, every pond water I drink I get an infection - What, did a zombie piss in the pond? This system, and the probabilities is nothing but a huge disappointment for me.

Try to boil the water helps a good amount.

Unboiled water and uncooked food has a good chance to infect you.

Canned food/drinks and drinking from wells will not infect you though. It just sounds like you either didn't read the patch notes, or are playing carelessly.

carry 2 Canteens + 1 empty tin (to boil the water), and remember to cook all food not found in cans, and you'll be fine.
