Arma2 + DayZ Historical Lore 1.2

Recommended Posts

The Chernarus map that is the official map of DayZ has a bit of history. Operation Harvest Red, the Czech Republic, multiple scenarios, EW etc.

I love lore, story line can make a game. So why not add books, news papers etc. telling the stories of the missions in Arma2. It would be a awesome way to show respects to the roots of DayZ and give old Arma vets some nostalgic reading.

It doesn't have to end with books and news papers through. If there was a mine field in Arma2 or Czech Republics campaign, you could transfer it over to DayZ like it was forgotten after the war, or couldn't get to cleaning it up due to the infection break out.

The FOB from Harvest Red could be added maybe, though if i recall it was destroyed by Arty. So a Damaged FOB would be cool.

Things like that would be so cool.

This would explain why there is such a Western influence in the map, i.e. Guns, Cars, heli's, British troops, etc.

Would also like to see some history lore about how the virus broke out

Note: I'm not asking for a story that you can follow, any kind lore where the main character (you) becomes a hero and saves the day or anything like that. That isn't what DayZ is about there are no main characters, each story is different based 100% on the player...and I have no intuitions to change that. Though historical lore of other events would be a real thing in a real life DayZ, News papers of the days before would be around, history books would be around etc. etc.

We would find books on... say...the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, News articles about it, telling stories of soldiers over there.. I think that concept could transfer over. But DayZ would have the history of Arma2

>The Chernogorsk map

You mean Chernarus? Chernogorsk is a main city on the coast.

One of the main aspects of the game is the fact that there is no story or narrative. I'm a big fan of game lore myself, but I don't feel this title is the place for it.

Good post, though.

Well, historical lore. Not really following a storyline in the present ;) sorry if i confused you

Dyslexia ;)

I like this idea.

I was thinking like, little stories to follow.

Sorta like Dark Souls, but without characters to hint you out.

Just papers, pictures, messages, bodies, etcetera, etcetera.

If we add cameras and notes and stuff, we won't need what I just mentioned, though.

We can follow the stories of other players who documented their adventure.

Anyway, yeah, your idea is cool .

would love to see such stuff..mixed with background about the virus and the outbreak..

btw...there would be no NATO presence in Chernarus without the Arma2 background story...no M4..no M16...no Humvee..no Huey..

pretty good points, It validates the reason there are western equipment in chernarus, And yeah I'd like to see early news papers about the infection spreading and stuff. Maybe even audio/video logs of it from news rooms

I like the idea of having collectibles such as medical and quarantine force documents from the start of the virus outbreak, also papers/maps marked/notes taken by civilians at the start of the outbreak regarding civilian shelters, road to take, estimated locations where infected were spotted etc.

Quarantine documents is an amazing idea! They could do those paint on the doors that they do.. lol idk what it's called though

I'm not a fan of story.

Aside from one or two very exceptional examples - I think humans are terrible at making up stories. Some people, take for example Stephen King, I believe are excellent at character development. Generally speaking, I think Stephen King's stories are not that great - but I love the way he develops the characters. I am much less interested in the setting that he puts the characters in as to how the characters react when he places them in that setting.

Context is important, as it the suspension of disbelief - so these are things we are looking to put into the environment in terms of how the virus works and what it is. But I am a firm and staunch believer that no story written by a writer will ever be more compelling than what has organically happened in real-life between two people. So I like to think the story of what happens in the "DayZ" world will be driven by the players. If and when writers become involved in DayZ, it will simply be to analyze and record the various legends of players, something like a historian in real life.

"So I like to think the story of what happens in the 'DayZ' world will be driven by the players" I am not talking about what happens in the DayZ world. I'm talking about what happen before it.

But I get what you're saying and I agree. To have a cut scene or quest would be God awful and I sure as hell don't want to find a book that tells me I need 10 bear asses. But let's face it, DayZ has a lot of down time. Some Nostalgic reading of Operation Harvest red would do some good

To be honest, I'd rather have no lore, than bad lore. You've done well thus far with DayZ, you'll make the right call on stories ;)

True, although the only thing I trust to have in the game is science not story. I'm happy for us to have some science in the game, and that is what my brother (Dr Richard Hall) is there to provide. I'm considering some kind of disaster consultant and trying to work with some thirty-party disaster agencies to get their help in performing some serious analysis of what might actually happen if my brother's proposed virus were actually released.

We're not going to be able to achieve hard science-fiction, because some liberties must be taken with two aspects of the virus. But there is a fair amount of plausibility in what my brother has come up with.

Hello there

Firstly, agreed on the Stephen King aspect take IT or The Body as good examples.

As to the "story" idea, I think it would be a nice "nod" to the arma/a2/ofp community to have the occasional reference thrown in, but it would have to be subtle and not "in your face"

These could simply be a graffiti reference to General Guba or a recruitment poster etc.

I read this thread while listening to the Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl soundtrack. Needless to say, I fully support the idea.

I would love little historical stories littered across the map. I can already see myself being killed by some 1337 bandit :bandit: while reading a story. that 1337 bandit will think he is so stealth! :D

In Stalker, looting bodies can give you clues on how the person died. It is fun and unobtrusive.

I agree. If anything story wise were to be added. It would have to be unobtrusive. The main focus needs to be the player and "Your Story". That is paramount and it is what brought people to the mod.

Any back story or scientific origins of the virus would be secondary. Many players probably could not careless about back story. Therefore, it shouldn't be throw at those players.

There are however, others who love exploring and delving into the origins of a universe. I am one of these people and would really appreciate if the things in the OP made it into the game further down the road.

Good point about being in your face. I've seen what Imgur/reddit has done to Emma Watson..

I feel like a large part of the players of the mod couldn't careless about story and the origins of the virus. There are of course others who would love some back story. And then there are others who would love a full on story.

I personally fall into the "some back story" category. I also feel like the people who want a full story are a small minority.

There is a happy medium of some having lore/context to please the folks that like that stuff and making it unobtrusive for those who just want to play the game. And as per usual, it is your job to find it Rocket. GL HF!

P.S. I hope that made sense.

They could do those paint on the doors that they do.. lol idk what it's called though

They are usually INSARAG structural markings (http://www.insarag.o...guidelines.html), or some local variation.

I was in Christchurch, NZ about 10 months after the 2011 earthquake. Most of the downtown area was cordoned off but not much demolition had been done yet. I'll never forget the grass growing up through cracks in deserted streets between glass fronted office buildings. Buildings that appeared mostly undisturbed except for the SAR markings spray painted on their doors. It looked and felt like the end of the world.

Dang Rocket, I bet you made this guy think his thread was really special. Lol.

Anyways OP, Rocket talked about this in a recent interview, which you can find here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/120064-dayzgame-shannonzkiller-jan-2013-interviewlivestream-with-rocket/unread/ But then again, he just straight up gave you a direct answer.

From the interview:

Q: Will the game explain a little about the back story, why things have happened etc?

A: Our aim is to make items that allow you to find out about the virus and stuff in the world. My brother (being the virologist he is) has come up with a plausible virus

P.S. I envy you, you lucky dog. You had the creator of the game respond to your post.

first of all... hunting for background lore and information about the virus would be simply one more immersive thing to do in the gameworld, especially for people who are not that big in the squadfightingwehavetofindachopper thing :P ....finding out more about the situation ( the virus) and the hope for a cure and therefore a future not only for ourselves but maybe for all mankind, would be a big motivation to survive....

beside this, giving small historical or general information about the gameworld ,in this case a russian country, make things a lot more believable....

BUT...sometimes no lore is more lore (not Mordor :D ) !

Since Rocket confirmed that writing notes, letters and even books ingame will be possible I really hope for creative input from the player community...maybe people will start writing about what has happened in their home countries or to their families etc ..

I imagine something like what is going on with Metro2033...the Metro Universe...the novel, most of you will know,is taking place in Moscow after a nuclear war. After discussing it on the forums people from all over the world are starting to write novels and short stories now about what has happend in the different parts of the world in this "metro universe"...

for the dayz universe this means, without too much official lore, people are free to write their own stories..but based on a few basic things like the virus...

I think some back lore would be great. I'm good with what Rocket has said about finding items and stuff where we can find out about the virus. But yea, graffiti, posters and news papers on the ground would be great. Maybe a wall with a bunch of...have you seen pictures (like in 28 days later) would be cool. Stuff like that. Oh and more dead rotting corpses.

I also like the idea someone gave about Haz-mat suites. We should be able to wear them!!
